History teaches us not to dismiss kiddie pop. Stevie Wonder was once Little Stevie Wonder, just as Lil Wayne was once little Lil Wayne, child gangsta rapper. And let's not forget ex-Mouseketeers Britney and Justin. Purists disdain teenybopper music as cynical pap, foisted on the young by Svengalis who lurk in the shadows, counting money. But bubblegum can be a great farm system, honing skills that pay dividends in later life.

Lately, Disney's kiddie pop has been plenty profitable, with High School Musical and Hannah Montana seemingly the only bulwarks against the collapse of the record business. Unlike Britney and her cohorts in the Nineties teen-pop boom, Disney's current stars are G-rated, easing tweeners' transition to adolescence with music that replicates the sounds of the Top 40 while leaving out the sex and complicated emotions. That's the case with Camp Rock, whose soundtrack offers vanilla takes on "Since U Been Gone"-style rock ("Our Time Is Here") and dance pop ("Hasta la Vista"). But the many self-esteem anthems ("Here I Am," "This Is Me," etc.) grade into narcissism — are they really instilling the right values? The bright spots here are Joe Jonas, who delivers pathos on the power ballad "Gotta Find You," and Disney's new ingénue, Demi Lovato, who bears down with a ferocity that suggests, when her inevitable solo album comes out, things could get interesting....full text

True confession: I had more fun at the Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus Concert Tour than I've had in a long time at the movie theater. I think it's safe to say that we're seeing the beginning of a new wave in movie theaters; bringing concerts to fans in 3-D in the comfort of a movie theater, for a fraction of the ticket prices of a live concert, is going to be the Next Big Thing -- so long as it's done as well as Disney has pulled off the Hannah Montana concert.

Here's the backstory, in case you haven't heard. Hannah Montana is the Disney Channel's huge hit show among the tween set. It's more than a show, it's a phenomena, spawning everything from Hannah Montana dolls to Hannah wigs and dress-up clothes to a sing-and-dance-along video game that teaches girls (and boys, let's not be gender-specific here) all Hannah's cool moves. Part of the enormous appeal of Hannah Montana is the show's central conceit: Hannah Montana, a famous pop star, is the secret superstar identity of Miley Stewart, an ordinary, dorky girl struggling to get through her freshman year of high school.By day, Miley and her best friend Lilly (Emily Osment) fight all the battles every girl fights in her teen years -- the agony of an untimely pimple, the torment of the snobby popular girls, who forever have Miley and Lilly on their "loser" list, the homework, the sleepovers and fights and makeups that characterize the lives of teen girls. By night, Miley dons a platinum Cher wig, puts on her cool clothes, and becomes Hannah Montana, the ultimate cool girl and envy of the very girls who make her life as Miley a challenge in the halls of her high school....full text

Miley Cyrus is one of the most influential forces in popular culture today, but her abilities as an actress and as a musician are average, at best. The frenzied media storm around Hannah Montana is a marketing dream, which is more a testament to Disney's power than to Miley Cyrus's talent. She's fine for a kids star, but when she jumps into real show business she's going to get blind sided. Her acting on the show is not very good (although she is pretty limited creatively), and her music is pretty bad. A lot of people could look good on stage with a great band, dancers, and tons of pyrotechnics. She might be cherished by pre-teens today, but when this generation grows up in 5-10 years, I just don't see her staying relevant. Kudos to her for being so popular and charismatic, but the chances of her evolving into a real artist seems very, very low....full text
