Aerosmith guitar god Joe Perry once told Rolling Stone he enjoyed turning his kids on to classic Sixties stoner rock like Moby Grape, Fleetwood Mac and Blodwyn Pig. "I don't know if we would be the same band without Blodwyn Pig," he said in 2001. "And nobody's fucking heard of Blodwyn Pig!" The kids in Tab the Band know their Blodwyn Pig — but then, they're Joe Perry's sons. They play bluesy, sleazy guitar raunch that evokes early Aerosmith, along with a host of now-obscure hippie faves. Tony and Adrian Perry (plus a drummer whose name begins with B, which is still no excuse for the band name) are one Boston power trio proudly schooled in the past, doing the old man proud. "Mitch Connor" is the finest Foghat tribute you'll hear all year (and probably the only one). Tab bite Deep Purple in the timely Scientology satire "The House of El Ron." "Chuckles" could pass for second-album Steppenwolf, while "Paid for By" is pure Exile Stones. But the peak is "Secretary's Day," which sounds like nothing so much as I've Got the Rock 'n Rolls Again, the absurdly underrated second album by the Joe Perry Project....full text

TAB The Band is a melodic guitar rock band with a healthy dose of Mick Jagger vocal snarl. This act also has a wonderful sense of humor. When they say of a girl, “she’s an Alex not a Mallory,” it’s just the sort of Family Ties reference that makes my day. Nothing on Pulling out Just Enough to Win is all that complicated. Instead, TAB The Band does the simple stuff extremely well. “Secretary’s Day” is a chugging rocker, which doesn’t feature a whole lot of sonic dynamics. But it doesn’t need any frills. So rather than turning the studio into some kind of an aural LSD experiment, these guys plug in, turn it up, and smash the joint. This is crazy beautiful driving music. Play it in the car with all the windows down, and watch out for jealous stares....full text

Joe Perry’s boys sure love their dad. At a moment when we’re being inundated by rock progeny, some deserving and most not, only Jason Bonham recalls ancestral glories the way Tab do Aerosmith. Resort to early Stones comparisons if you like—that’s what everyone did with Joe’s band back before guitarist Tony and bassist-vocalist Adrian were there to come home to. So live with it—there are many worse things in music than scaled-down arena rock. Adrian’s stage drawl is a little regressive, and Reverend Run should tell them about jimmy hats—“as long as you and I don’t make a child” plus “the rabbit done died” plus the album title bodes ill for second-generation groupies. But this band rawks without reverence or irony; every one of its sexist songs fresh and enthusiastic....full text
