THE CAPTAIN - This Is Hazelville reviewCambridge-based Captain are one of those bands that don’t exactly sound of the moment, but the important thing is that they never meant to. They owe (a great deal of) their sensibilities to the 1980s, not least because Trevor Horn has produced the album, but try not to ‘really quite like them a lot actually’ at your peril.    Drowned in sound
Captain have me torn. Part of me hates the sing-along choruses, dripped in synth and glossy production. But then, paradoxically, the other side to me rather ashamedly loves the overtly clean sound, all-too-perfect vocals and perfectly-formed pop structures. Lemme tell you something, indie kids. If you spend months following around a band no-one's heard of, watching them gig in tiny scum pits and sitting through Fat Bob lookalike support acts while you're waiting for their set, all in the anticipation that when they do make it big you can sneer 'I saw them when' to all your mates, you have to accept the possibility that when their day finally comes, it's not only your cool pals in the drainpipe jeans who notice you were right all along, but effing Radio 2 as well....full text
