The Ting Tings - We Started Nothing

   Rollingstones
Both members of this U.K. pop duo — singer-guitarist Katie White and drummer Jules De Martino — used to play in second-tier teen-pop acts. Their earlier experiences clearly left them with harsh feelings about the music industry: De Martino has admitted that their thumping disco single "Shut Up and Let Me Go" is a breakup song written for their former record label, not an old flame. But those formative years also gave them an instinct for industrial-grade pop hooks, which is probably why Apple selected "Shut Up" for its recent iPod ad. On their full-length debut, the Ting Tings craft peppy New Wave that's relentlessly catchy: "That's Not My Name" is a Toni Basil-style chant-along fueled by a punk-funk groove, "Be the One" sounds like Blondie, and "We Started Nothing" dresses up a ripping break beat in sumptuous soul horns. The Ting Tings toss in enough untreated guitars, grrrl-power lyrics and subsonic Moog blurts to give We Started Nothing a certain edginess. But it's just a front: An album that's as joyful as anything by Gwen Stefani or Kylie Minogue doesn't need indie cred....full text

The Ting Tings make a very strong album debut with We Started Nothing. The whole album is a fun time that is reminiscent to 80s pop. The driving drum beats and the guitar riffs are entertaining and the lyrical style is edgy and fun. There is a great mix of simplicity and production value in We Started Nothing.

Although the songs sound somewhat similar, each song has some original aspects to it. With the song “Great DJ” vowels have never sounded as fun. “That’s Not My Name” is reminiscent of Toni Basil’s “Hey Mickey” but still has a lyrical beauty. How many people, both men and women, have gotten names wrong; I’m sure it’s countless. “That’s Not My Name” also has the vocals of Jules De Martino (the male half of The Ting Tings) which is a great addition. Most of the songs on the album are really catchy, so you will probably find yourself humming or singing vowels after listening to the whole album.

Katie White doesn’t have the strongest vocal range, or even attempts much of a range, but the execution is great. White probably has the strongest vocals on “Traffic Light” which has some reminiscence to Lily Allen, except the track is more angelic. Sometimes White sounds more like a cheerleader, but the execution of her singing combined with the drum beat is what makes the whole package catchy....full text

“We Started Nothing” is the debut album from indie pop duo The Ting Tings. Mixing pop and indie without diluting the power of either is no mean feat, but this album succeeds in spectacular style.

The Ting Tings are the Pop explosion made up of Jules De Martino and Katie White. The duo have teased and tantalized during the latter months of 2007 by releasing extremely limited singles and playing very few headline shows. The duly deposited buzz has built steadily to launch one of the most exciting British Indie-Pop acts to emerge from these shores in years....full text
