Mr. Oizo - Lambs Anger reviewParis native, and member of the hipster’s godsend Ed Banger family, Mr. Oizo (neé Quentin Dupieux) is bringing his trademark experimental electro beats back to the club dance floors with his latest release Lamb’s Anger. You might remember him from his overnight sensation “Flat Beat” that was featured in those Levi’s commercials with a yellow little puppet named Flat Eric. Having put out more experimental electronic beats in his previous releases, Oizo hits us with a sample-rich album filled with everything from funk and jazz influences to house, hip hop and more traditional electronica. Highlights include “Two Takes It” featuring Carmen Castro, a throwback to ’88 with samples from Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock’s “It Takes Two” (AKA the best song EVER), and the club-banger “Gay Dentists.” Labelmate Uffie (of course) makes an appearance as well, rapping (would you call it that…?) on “Steroids,” a catchy track that serves as a welcome chance to catch a break after having no doubt danced your ass off during the block of electro-bliss that it follows. “Positif” and “Erreur Jean” are the synth-heavy works more characteristic of Ed Banger, and don’t disappoint in rounding out this diverse and fulfilling album. Oizo’s latest effort easily becomes the pitch-perfect soundtrack to an epic night out, reminding us that these cats across the pond know exactly how to make electronic music seem both strange and familiar, music that practically anyone can enjoy. Back in ancient times (1999, to be precise), the French music producer and film maker Mr Oizo invented Flat Eric, a little puppet that starred in a series of Levi’s commercials. The soundtrack, ‘Flat Beat’, was Number One everywhere forever and idiots loved the whole cute, furry concept. But can’t we let bygones be bygones? Because now, freshly hooked-up with Ed Banger, Oizo has made a joyously daft party album. It sounds like Bumblebeez, LFO, Lord Skywave and, er, Brand New Heavies, whizzed up in a soup of shameless funk samples, bizarre radiophonic interludes and vintage rave riffs. It also contains a guest spot from Uffie that doesn’t make you want to chuck your iPod down a drain. Remarkable, no?

He may have been in the music making game for ten years now but Mr Oizo (also known as Quentin Dupieux) is still best known for that nodding puppet in the Levi's ad.

Oizo's oddball soundtrack for flogging denim will always be remembered for being one of the most unusual UK number ones but, a decade on from Flat Beat, has he managed to shake off the ghost of Flat Eric and create an album that will once again place him at the top of the techno tree?

His third album proper flies through its 17 tracks in just over 40 minutes, which makes it all the more incredible that it reportedly took just six weeks to create. Overall that helps maintain interest and proves that Oizo's crazed mind is pumping out ideas by the dozen but sometimes you wish he would stick with an idea for a few more minutes and elaborate and build upon it. It does leave you craving more though, which is surely preferable to a meandering eight-minute mix that outstays its welcome....full text
