Blut Aus Nord - Memoria Vetusta II: Dialogue With the Stars

The flexing and re-defining of black metal is one of the great joys of post-millennial extreme music. Long viewed as the most orthodox and ugly of metal strains, black metal -- especially from countries outside its Norwegian birthplace -- now encompasses the legitimately beautiful pastoralia of Agalloch and Alcest, the hermetic atmospherics of Xasthur and Velvet Cacoon, the psychedelic experimentation of Nachtmystium and recent Enslaved. Though it remains shackled to the violence and Satanism of its bloody beginnings in popular mythology, the black metal of today is as diverse, philosophically and musically, as any other genre. Few bands reflect the changing face of black metal quite as well as France’s Blut Aus Nord. It’s probably overstating things to say that Memoria Vetusta II: Dialogue With the Stars will appeal to fans of the Cure or the Walkmen, both bands that share Blut Aus Nord’s penchant for guitars that paint darkened swaths with gobs of reverb. But where the unrepentant dissonance of Blut Aus Nord’s last couple albums were designed to suck inward, Dialogue With the Stars shoots out clear, ringing streams of tonal tremolo picking and cosmic keyboard beds. The periodic interludes are melodic, mellow, and sometimes downright relaxing. That's not something you expect from a typical black metal album, but Blut Aus Nord aren't a typical black metal band....full text |

We here at Metal Injection have enjoyed a longtime love affair with the French metal scene. Rob & the boys are all about Gorod and Gojiiiraaaaaa, and have given them lots of love on this site (see here, here, and here). Those bands are undeniably rad, but they call me Grim Kim for a reason - allow me to introduce you to one of my favorite bands, (French or otherwise) - BLUT AUS NORD. Norway, Sweden, Finland, Eastern Europe and South America have long been the dark Meccas of black metal, but the USA, Japan, and France in particular are steadily creeping up to stake their claims for global supremacy. Simply put, French black metal rules. I've been jocking Deathspell Omega, Hell Militia, Blut Aus Nord, Peste Noire, and the Black Legions since I was just a little tyke with a Hellhammer backpatch. Consistently underrated and until recent times, more or less ignored by the majority of American metalheads, the French scene has given rise to some of the most challenging, forward-thinking, ass-kicking black metal of the past decade, and shows no signs of slowing down....full text |
