 Solid. Reliable. Unspectacular. Has-beens. Ladies and gentleman, I give you...The Charlatans!
Rarely has a band been so criminally underrated and taken for granted as Tim Burgess and co. After the apathetic public response to the tepid Simpatico- their most recent, and worst, album- this compilation reeks of contractual obligation. However, it serves an important purpose. People- yes, you!- must now come to realise that The Charlies are one of the greatest singles bands of their generation. | Releasing an album that spans a career can be a hit and miss affair. The sound and songwriting styles change and great songs can be lost in a sea of meritocracy. Luckily with The Charlatans their high songwriting standards means their 'career to date' compilation doesn't suffer. They have a very distinctive sound, and while they have matured as a unit they still stand out from the rest....full text |

| Just 3 years shy of two decades in the game it still seems a bit early to be banging out a second ‘greatest hits’ set but if it serves no purpose other than to remind just how many great songs they have had over the years then fair enough. In that time period The Charlatans have released nine studio albums, twenty-seven singles, a B-sides album, a live album as well as a greatest hits across three record labels....full text |
