The Lonely Island - Incredibad reviewSaturday Night Live actor Andy Samberg is a true geek hero: 2007's "Dick in a Box" earned him 35 million YouTube views, an Emmy and a fling with Kirsten Dunst. Now, with the help of his Berkeley, California, hometown buddies Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, he's also a rock star. Spoofing R&B and club hits, the trio's debut CD-DVD features hits like "Lazy Sunday" and "Jizz in My Pants," plus inspired cameos from T-Pain ("I'm on a Boat") and Norah Jones ("Dreamgirl"). Some punch lines feel left over from the dial-up era (is anyone still "doing the Bartman"?), but "Like a Boss" is a Dirty South anthem that's absurd enough for Lil Wayne. Over the past few years, Hip Hop has developed into a parody of itself. So it was only a matter of time that these clichés would be exposed by a comedian. Usually that person would be Weird Al Yankovic, but this go around The Lonely Island beat him to the punch.

I know Weird Al did some hip-hop parodies, but as you are well aware, he mostly makes fun of the original subject matter of the song and makes a G-rated version of it. Most of you will recognize these songs from Saturday Night Live’s Digital Shorts features. The team behind these digital shorts is The Lonely Island, a comedy troupe started in the early part of the decade. The troupe features SNL’s Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer (director of Hot Rod) and Jorme Toccone (Rod’s stepbrother in Hot Rod)....full text

Removed from the digital shorts you've seen on "Saturday Night Live" or the Internet about a thousand times, the novelty songs of the Lonely Island -- Andy Samberg and cohorts Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone -- too rarely work either as music or comedy.

So many of these quasi-hip-hop tracks are like Dane Cook routines, managing to get by on the manic energy of their delivery but revealing no actual joke when broken down to their raw material. "On a Boat" is a decent example of something altogether not funny -- riding on a boat -- becoming mildly amusing through sheer enthusiasm, even though it still sounds like they had T-Pain for X amount of time and didn't have any clue what to do with him.

We get to relive the rightly famous Justin Timberlake collab "D--- in a Box" and the two-years played-out "Lazy Sunday," which, again, was funny...why?...full text
