Thin Lizzy - Still Dangerous

   Billboard
Taken from a recently unearthed 1977 performance at Philadelphia's Tower Theater, "Still Dangerous" does a great job of highlighting the Irish quartet's live chops. The late singer/bassist Phil Lynott's melodies and the dual-guitar interplay of Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson hold up well after 32 years as they road test some songs that would appear on 1977's "Bad Reputation" album. But the pacing of the performance is odd, with their biggest hits ("Jailbreak," "Boys Are Back in Town," "Dancing in the Moonlight") front-loaded on the first half of the album. And all but two of the songs ("Massacre" and "Opium Trail") are also on 1978's concert masterpiece, "Live and Dangerous." So while the album is a good showcase of a band firing on all cylinders, it will likely hold the most appeal for completists. —Bram Teitelman...full text

It always made me mad that Phil Lynott died at what was probably long before the peak of his career. Sure he and Thin Lizzy released some classic hits but I suspect that they would have gained much from the rise of metal in the 80's, would have seen a long career in the industry, and over time released a tremendous amount of great music. The story of Phil Lynott and Thin Lizzy has to be as much about what we never got to see or hear from the band due to Phil's death as it is about the legacy that he left behind. With such an incredible voice its sad to know that what is out there is all we will ever have.

Luckily every once in a while gems appear to shine a light on what was and what could have been, and such is the case with the newly released Still Dangerous.

Recorded live in 1977 some of the material sounds a bit dated but Phil's voice sounds crisp and clear, the band sounds exceptionally tight, and in the guitar work you can hear the runs that would inspire countless rock and metal guitarists to explore further. It literally gave me a chill to hear some of these songs again live, like "Cowboy Song" and "Jailbreak". I never saw Thin Lizzy live so this is the closest I will ever get....full text

Classic Irish rockers Thin Lizzy unearthed this powerful live set from 1977 on Still Dangerous. The band blazes through classic cuts “Jailbreak,” “Cowboy Song,” and “The Boys Are Back In Town,” guitar dueling glory included. Recorded at Philadelphia’s Tower Theatre the band seemed careful not to include fancy studio overdubs as heard on many live albums from this era—by preserving the original sound on this release Thin Lizzy seems to have acknowledged the past mistakes of 1978’s Live and Dangerous. The only disappointment of Still Dangerous is its short length—10 songs leaves the listener foaming like a hungry rabid pit bull. Additionally, it is unfortunate that “Whiskey in the Jar” wasn’t part of this show. Other than the length, this set contains a genuine rock and roll vibe that should not be passed over.
