BLUETREE - God of This City reviewThis Belfast, Northern Ireland-based worship band is starting to generate strong buzz on this side of the Atlantic as the title track from this impressive collection gains steam at Christian radio. The song has already become a church anthem thanks to exposure from Chris Tomlin and the Passion movement. This solid set proves there are more great songs where that one came from. "Life's Noise" is a dynamic, thought-provoking opener with a grand, atmospheric sound, while "For You" is a compelling worship song fueled by passionate vocals and a cool melody that conveys a sense of urgency and purpose. The uplifting "God's Plan" and the ballad "River" are among the album's other highlights. Look for this talented outfit to become one of the Christian market's most enthusiastically embraced new worship bands. —Deborah Evans Price...full text

Even with an ocean separating the United States from Bluetree's home of Belfast, Ireland, the band definitely identifies with the common struggle of desensitization to a seemingly constant stream of bad news.

With bombings, a long history of bloodshed between those who actually claim to love and serve God, and random acts of violence the stuff of daily headlines in Belfast, the band's lead vocalist and guitarist Aaron Boyd admits that "you eventually grow so numb that when you hear that a car bomb killed 10 people, you immediately go on with the mundane business of the day without as much as giving it a second thought."

That's precisely why Boyd and his bandmates, which includes drummer Johnny Hobson and deejay Pete Kernoghan, have never been interested in writing feel-good worship songs that may incite a few goosebumps on Sunday morning, but don't exactly inspire change and action once the church service has ended....full text

Do we really need another ‘contemporary praise and worship’ band on the CCM scene? Not really – but thankfully, Bluetree rises above the limitations of the genre with God of this City, an album that preserves a creative rock sensibility while delivering an often-passionate, engaging and – yes – worshipful experience.

The project opens up with the sound of radio static and broadcast noise: a voice emerges from the background, paraphrasing the Biblical passage about God’s voice being heard not in the wind or the earthquake, but in a still, small voice. Electronic samples set up a solid rhythmic groove, quickly joined by driving rock guitars setting up a powerful wall of sound – “He wasn’t in the fire, He wasn’t in the quake,” sings Aaron Boyd, “He wasn’t in the wind – He’s in the whisper here.” Far from a whisper, “Life’s Noise” sets up the listener for what’s to come: music from a band that’s well-able to combine stirring rock music with no-nonsense Christian lyrics and creative, fresh arrangements.

If sincerity and good intentions were criteria for good reviews, these boys from Belfast would seem to have what it takes for an enthusiastic thumbs-up, but Bluetree offers more than just non-challenging feel-good music. Where much contemporary ‘praise and worship’ music falls prey to listless arrangements and awkwardly-fit lyrics, Bluetree manages to transform each song into something interesting through strong musicianship and the ability to intersect powerful rock-tinged ballads with changes in tempo and intensity. When they rock out, it’s powerful, and when they slow the tempo down (often in the same song – listen to “Burn Me Up”) they keep a smoldering expectation in the listener’s head …you know the strong stuff’s coming....full text
