On the upcoming Art Brut album lead singer Eddie Argos pays tribute to the albums made on a shoestring. While nowadays some bands can be accused of overproducing records, no one can claim Jeffrey Lewis is not retaining that slap dash art. Having toured the world on fans sofas, covered Crass songs and opened for Jarvis Cocker, Jeffrey Lewis is indie’s saviour. Taking on another band (The Junkyard) for latest offering ‘Em Are I’ we are a given a path into Lewis' imaginative mind - and it sure is a treat. You see despite people saying Jeffrey Lewis is twee beyond belief and an out of tune vocalist with a so-indie-it-hurts vibe, they forget the man has a hell of an imagination. Opening with 'Slogans' Lewis' weak vocals receive a boost from the fast strumming guitars before changing to a sweet ode to public transport with 'Roll Bus Roll'. It's a quiet break from Lewis' ambling guitars, yet both songs compliment each other perfectly across the album. Live favourite 'If Life Exists?' is given a new burst of life with its' complex guitars- yet it is again Lewis' stories that really grab your attention. Only Jeffrey himself could get away with the tale of an illuminous pig in 'Good Old Pig, Gone To Avalon', and it's the highlight of the album. Partnered with a theory of whistling past the graveyard so the corpses don't tell you what happens when you die, each song brings a new world of life into your earphones....full text |

| It was dark and there were 3 rows of people in front of me, please excuse awful photo. I was going to draw a picture of it but I’m feeling to lazy to connect my scanner. So, there was a ’secret’ Jeffrey Lewis show today before his set at Union Chapel tomorrow. The room was ridicuolously tiny, I heard the door guy say capacity was 40 people. 40 people crammed together in a room that was about the size of a shoebox. Luckily I had a pretty decent view and could watch Jeffrey easy enough, which came in handy when he played the Complete History Of Communism Part 5, Korea. He was joined by his brother Jack, drummer Dave and a new lady vocalist whose name I don’t know. The band sounded good, Jeffrey was in as good spirits as ever, and the new songs sounded brilliant. They played for about half an hour and then the room emptied out. I really cannot wait to see him again tomorrow. GO SEE JEFFREY LEWIS!...full text |

| ‘Em Are I by Jeffrey Lewis & The Junkyard is Jeff’s fifth full-length for Rough Trade, and represents the first time that all of the greatest elements of his previous recordings have formed a fully cohesive and amazing whole! With his comic/tragic lyrics straight from the heart, and guitar style ranging from finger-picked roots to outer-space swoops, Jeffrey Lewis has worked on and off in between tours to spin an 11-song production that seems to reflect a love of the last 40 years of popular music, all filtered through Jeff’s unmistakable idiosyncratic muse. Mostly tracked on classic analogue tape at Brooklyn’s Emandee Studios with engineer and co-producer Mark Ospovat, Jeff’s usual band of drummer Dave Beauchamp and bassist/brother Jack Lewis are joined at various times by friends and acquaintances including French indie-heroes Herman Dune, American banjo troubadour Emily Lacy, and the album even features a lead guitar cameo from Dinosaur Jr.’s J Mascis....full text |
