Red Light Company - Fine Fascination reviewWhile comparisons are inevitable, those being levelled at grandiose, multi-national indie fantasists, The Red Light Company, are for the most part very misleading. Casting them as the latest in a line of cold-hearted merchants of Teutonic gloom, of the kind proffered by Editors and White Lies, is to completely miss the heart-stopping romance and lightning bolts of joy which charge every oversized beat and shimmering melody of their stunning debut. And while they undoubtedly share Arcade Fire's desolate, bible-belt elation, "Fine Fascination" is anything but a secret treasure for the knowing few. This is epic, widescreen euphoria for the masses.

Reluctance to make the obvious comparison and name the London five-piece, led by poetic Australian Richard Frenneaux, as The Killers' natural heirs is understandable; as if labelling them as such would land them with a weight of expectation they could never deliver on. Yet from the first '80s guitar stabs of "Words Of Spectacular" the likeness is unmistakable, and through the fireworks and heartache choruses of "Scheme Eugene" and "Arts & Crafts", it's clear that this is breathtakingly ambitious arena rock which hits every high it aims for....full text

I want to play bass in London. I don't fuck around." That's what Wyoming raised bass player Shawn Day emailed to vocalist and guitarist Richard Frenneaux in what were the formative steps towards the formation of recent Radio 1 botherers, Red Light Company. At least that's what the band would have the 200,000 people that have visited their MySpace page believe. The story degenerates into suitably pretentious rock and roll histrionics about denied entry to countries and beating all the odds in order to play music together. And so it was, Red Light Company formed in 2007, snuggling themselves into the musical bosom of our nation with puppy-dog eyes, and a penchant for anthemic indie rock. A romantic story - if a little detached from the truth....full text

If it's illegal, self-destructive or likely to result in long-term unhappiness, Red Light Company want to sing about it, employing man-sized anthems as their medium. At least, that's what they say about themselves, creating the tantalising prospect of a Babyshambles with actual tunes. As ever, the truth isn't as exciting. The American/British/Australian quintet do focus on pain, drug and sex addiction, suicide and, ahem, the stress of maintaining a relationship with a model - but their pedestrian take on things produces profundities such as "Listen to your heart" and "Destruction: something I need, it's a friend of mine". Such banal lyrics might transport you to the dark side if they weren't set to chipper new-wave melodies. The album is extravagantly catchy, and probably safe for impressionable children....full text
