Thunderheist were blessed (cursed?) with a huge amount of hype quite early in their career that propelled them into a busy schedule of touring long before they were ready to drop their full album. We were a bit worried that their club-ready booty-rap would be passé by the time it came out, and that it would be tough to stretch tracks in what’s essentially a singles-based genre into a full album.
Many would argue that hipster-hop has already reached the end of its life cycle, and they have a point. (Is Uffie still around? Does anyone care?). Luckily, Thunderheist are a very different beast from their early competitors. For one, Isis is not a trust fund brat taking the piss but an actual MC with real hip-hop history and skills, who, in between throwaway odes to ass-shaking, manages to tell some stories and flesh out some characters. That, coupled with Grahm Zilla’s versatile approach to beat production, puts them far ahead of the pack....full text |

Right from the repeated phrase "tap that booty" on the opening "Sweet 16," it's clear this coed Toronto duo has a soft spot for rap clichés. Born as a digitally assisted collaboration between two friends of friends who had never met, Thunderheist is the work of producer Grahm Zilla and rapper/singer Isis.
At first the project seems to fall into the post-Missy Elliott ranks of label-mates Spank Rock and countless imitators, but the production here leans more on slinky, minimal electro-funk. But Thunderheist prove more winning than most, due to Isis' knack for calm, rhythmic flow, all one- or two-syllable rhymes and the schoolyard-inspired spelling out of words. She doesn't go in for denseness, and these stripped-down anthems aren't crowded with guest stars, making them an antidote to the overblown party jams of acts like MSTRKRFT....full text |

| Club rap, with its leg-humping sexuality and boorish booty beats, seems fairly passé at this point. But the electro-fueled Toronto duo Thunderheist manage to pump life into the exhausted subgenre. On their debut, Isis sings and rhymes with equal verve, transforming from disco diva ("Nothing 2 Step 2") to coke-snorting hussy ("Freddie") to seductive jailbait ("Sweet 16"). Yeah, Thunderheist is all about the quick dance-floor fix, but Isis imbues her characters with quick-witted wickedness, and producer Graham Zilla churns out Spartan synth tracks that have an undeniably funky buzz....full text |
