Junior Boys - Begone Dull Care reviewSometimes less is more, as the adage goes. Thankfully, Junior Boys gets it. This restraint is precisely what makes their aesthetic so appealing—far from electronic music that ODs on glitches, blips and production acrobatics, these Canadians tread cautiously, creating carefully-crafted, intricate beats and effects.

On Begone Dull Care, Junior Boys step away from their heartbreak-driven first two albums, embracing a warmer, fuller sound that more prominently features Jeremy Greenspan’s breathy vocals. Devoted fans need not worry, though—the album still holds the melancholic flavor they’ve come to perfect, just with some added twinkling synths, hints at old-school R&B, and a splash of funk for good measure. Album highlight “Bits & Pieces” is pure seduction on the dance floor; with a hook like I see you better when the lights are out, it’s no surprise why Junior Boys are notoriously categorized as “bedroom-pop.” “Parallel Lines” similarly delves into a dreamy, dark space, whereas “Hazel” is an upbeat romp exploring new love, and “The Animator” slows it down for a sweet and simple tale of adoration, striking all the right chords. Junior Boys bring a sense of life and emotion to an oft impersonal and calculated genre. Theirs is a popularity built on human connection....full text

The nostalgia permeating Jadakiss's third solo album is difficult to place. Is it because Jada has officially -- that is to say, besides his mixtape appearances -- been absent for half a decade? Is it that hip-hop's relentless decentralization has made Jadakiss a mere reminder of rap's last Big Apple glory days? Or is it that the format he pursues on "The Last Kiss" -- wall-to-wall superstar guest shots, from Mary J. Blige to Pharrell to Lil Wayne -- seems a formula whose time has passed as well?

Whatever the answer, "The Last Kiss" ends up a reasonable, though backward-looking, outing. Jada's blunt-raw rasp is better suited to the rough-and-ready numbers like disc opener "Pain and Torture," but he's professional enough to make the slicker numbers (like "Can't Stop" and "Grind Hard," both knee-deep in female backing vocals) stand up as well....full text

Hamilton electro-pop heroes Junior Boys may actually be getting better with each album, an impressive feat considering the hyperbolic praise heaped on their debut. This time around they sound slightly more connected to genuine dance music, while at the same time stripping away some of the atmospherics to allow more of their subtle pop sensibilities to surface.

If you initially loved them for that ultra-restrained and delicate approach to electronic pop, don’t worry – this is still the Junior Boys, so you’re not going to find any coke-fuelled bangers celebrating the late-night life. This is the kind of album you play for that indie rock nerd who insists that electronic music will never be able to stand alongside “real” music. ...full text
