In the '60s, Booker T. and the MGs set the standard by which all soulfully rocking instrumental combos would be measured. Fifteen years after his last full-length album with that band, organist Booker T. returns to uphold the tradition he helped create, with spirited backing by Athens, Ga.'s Drive-By Truckers and old bud Neil Young (who contributes guitar to 9 of the CD's 10 tracks). No, nothing on Potato Hole is as unassailable as vintage MGs cuts like ''Green Onions'' and ''Time Is Tight.'' But the set's authoritative blend of grit and melody is mostly pretty ace — as are surprises like the sprightly run-through of OutKast's ''Hey Ya!'' B...full text |

| Potato Hole" comes loaded with good news for fans of sweet soul music. Not only is it Booker T. Jones' first solo outing in decades, but he's backed on these 10 instrumentals by the Drive-By Truckers, as well as Neil Young. But the guests' reverence for Booker T. is clear—the Truckers, as they did when they recently backed Bettye LaVette, know when to muscle up (on "Pound It Out") and how to hang back (on moving, B3-powered track "She Breaks," a sweet, shimmering number filled with references to Booker T.'s awesome past). For fans of left-field covers, "Potato Hole" (a 19th-century African-American term for the place where smuggled food was stashed beneath slave quarters) also sports a surprisingly boppy version of "Hey Ya," a nice raw trudge through Tom Waits' "Get Behind the Mule" and a sweet take on the Truckers' own "Space City." —Jeff Vrabel...full text |

As part of the house band at Stax Records and leader of Booker T. and the MGs, organist Booker T. Jones helped lay the soul music's foundation. "Potato Hole," his first solo album in 20 years, makes clear that he isn't done building on his legacy.
Refreshingly, he does so without compromise. There are no chart-baiting superstar guest vocalists or gimmicks, just gut-punching, funky, loose-limbed, rock 'n' soul jams recorded in down-and-dirty sessions without an inch of fat.
There are big names to be found in the liner notes, including Neil Young, who plays guitar on nine of the 10 tracks, and backing band the Drive-By Truckers. But both prove simpatico collaborators, backing off to showcase Booker T.'s sultry, lyrical organ melodies. Young doesn't duel for supremacy but engages in an easy back and forth with his peer, providing hot fuzz and stinging licks to opener "Pound it Out" and "Native New Yorker" and a gentler touch to the sensual "Nan." And the Truckers are as adept at churning up steam on a fun cover of OutKast's "Hey Ya" as they are providing slinking, head-bobbing accompaniment on "Warped Sister."...full text |
