Yusuf Islam - Roadsinger (To Warm You Through the Night) reviewThe time would seem to be nigh for a Cat Stevens revival: The warm, weathered, sensitive-guy folk that made Stevens (now known as Yusuf) a superstar in the 1970s is back in vogue among indie troubadours (his beard has also made a comeback); they may not know it yet, but Bon Iver's fans are merely the latest generation to go gaga for Tea for the Tillerman. Roadsinger is a crowd-pleaser, hewing to Yusuf's classic sound in tight, sweet ballads like "Welcome Home," which pushes his acoustic guitar and ragged voice to the foreground. Meanwhile, hippie preachiness is still Yusuf's default mode. "No one cares for anyone else," he croaks in "World O' Darkness." In other words: Ooh, baby, baby, it's a wild world....full text

In 2006, Yusuf Islam, the singer-songwriter formerly known as Cat Stevens, surprised the world with his return to mainstream music. An Other Cup, his first pop record in twenty-eight years, was one of the more intriguing and curious releases in recent memory. On one hand, it was a hodgepodge of songs more than a cohesive album, and Yusuf sounded very much like an artist who was shaking the dust off his guitar and trying to fit nearly three decades of musical ideas onto one tiny, little, plastic disc. On the other hand, standouts like “Heaven/Where True Love Goes” and “In the End” showed that Yusuf’s conversion and long hiatus had not diminished his ability to relate to listeners and deliver beautiful pop songs with a perfectly aged voice. In other words, An Other Cup wasn’t perfect, but it just felt good to have Yusuf back again-like hearing from an old friend who had been away far too long....full text

The second pop outing for Yusuf Islam [ tickets ] brings him closer to his former self as Cat Stevens while asserting a clearer mission for Yusuf as a 21st century performer. "Roadsinger" is not only the second album from the writer of "Wild World" and "Peace Train" devoid of any Muslim teachings or mentions, it's the work of a man at peace with his place in life and music. It's an honest record, filled with performances that are warm and graceful, an elegant follow-up to his early A&M albums such as "Teaser and the Firecat."

More assured than the too-ambitious "An Other Cup," the melodies here are simple, the arrangements sparse yet smart, the album's pace dreamlike. His voice remains rich and brimming with confidence. Grandfatherly in places, he avoids providing too much advice, choosing instead to lead by example. The personal life lessons are told with simple imagery, much of it weather related (rain, wind, sun) and done with a sense of examining a lifetime away from the limelight. Calmness and veracity abound in his ventures into darkness; what Cat did so well in the '70s, Yusuf is now doing here....full text
