Wolves in the Throne Room - Black Cascade / Malevolent Grain EP reviewAs much as one can call anything associated with black metal a crossover record, Two Hunters-- the sprawling second album from Wolves in the Throne Room-- was just that. Extolled by critics, embraced by indie rock kids, appreciated by metal legions, Wolves' overwhelming crescendos and glowing decrescendos, beautiful and brutal, spoke as much to worshippers of Emperor's Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk as acolytes of Radiohead's Kid A. The band offered an enigmatic allure, too, speaking of its communal farm outside of Olympia, Wash. And Wolves' espousal of a pagan approach to black metal-- a genre long bound to an upside-down cross-- was refreshing. So purists be damned: Two years ago, Wolves in the Throne Room offered a rendezvous for two very unlikely demographics by aiming extreme in several directions....full text

Ahead of their long-awaited Black Cascade album, due March 31st, Wolves in the Throne Room have readied this vinyl and limited CD release featuring two lengthy tracks of avant-garde black metal. Following the progressive tinges of 2007’s Two Hunters, Malevolent Grain masterfully weaves drawn out tremolo riffs with thick, naturalistic atmosphere and the unusual interplay between beautiful female vocals and ravenous metal howls.

The result is rewarding though, as the band has found an incredibly unique and emotive sound rarely seen in the genre, wherein pastoral beauty melds with existential dread....full text

With two critically acclaimed LP's under their belt, Wolves seem to be on the brink of....well, something completely different. The "trve" fans are probably crying in outrage that they've changed their logo so that you can actually read it and the more casual fans might just be put off by what this EP shows. Showing a little bit of what the future might hold and the ground they've already treaded, Malevolent Grain is bound to divide fans for a variety of reasons.

Let's start off with what may be the most controversial aspect of the new era of WitTR, which is the first track, "A Looming Resonance". For the first time in Wolves' history, this song contains only clean vocals and this is what seems to be dividing fans. The thing is, the vocals on here aren't like the beautifully haunting ones found on "Cleansing", the standout track from their previous LP, but are rather flat sounding in comparison. Initially, the vocals seem much worse than they actually are due to how radically different it sounds from anything they've done in the past. But, give it some time and the voice gradually seems to make more sense within the realm of all that is Wolves in the Throne Room....full text
