Iglu & Hartly - And Then Boom reviewMusic sometimes finds you at an essential level, encouraging such truisms as, "It just feels right." On their debut, And the Boom, Iglu & Hartley show an ability to elicit such a feeling, which at least tempers the album's overall mediocrity. Which is to say, its pop techniques are effective.

And the Boom, which bombed U.K. charts last year, could feel so good because its sound is comfortingly derivative of Police and Phil Collins-era Genesis. But if white-boy rap and new-wave posturing are deal breakers for you, you may respond the same way NME did last year: “Are you grasping your arms around chief rap goon Jarvis Anderson’s baby-oiled six-pack, the jaws of credibility snapping at your feet, or tuning out in utter revulsion?” Well, the complexity of the human experience means you can do both. It’s true that most of these songs fall into the already bloated musical genre of mediocore -- very, incredibly, groundbreakingly, extremely OK. But a few of them -- “Violent and Young,” “In This City,” “Out There” -- are what pop music is at its best: brimming with lowbrow intelligence that coalesces into choruses so consonant and true-blue that they stop conversation....full text

I’ll be completely honest. On the first few listens through Iglu & Hartly’s awkwardly titled ‘& Then Boom’, I really didn’t like it. Slightly bland, clearly 80’s derivative, and with a vocalist/rapper that sounds like Joe Pasquale pretending to be a gangster rapper. Not a good first impression. Every track began to meld into one another, and before I could count to ten, the album had nearly finished. All that was left was the final track ‘Jump Out Of Your Car’ to show me how good ‘& Then Boom’ could be.

And boy, did Iglu & Hartly do it in style!

Reviewing an album starting from the end is always strange, but ‘Jump Out Of Your Car’ is four minutes and fourty seven seconds of heartwarming golden rap brilliance. A persistent buzzy synth grinds away in the background, while drums positively dripping with miami vice bravado and brash sexuality race head to head with the singer. He skips and stumbles his words through the verses, before settling into a chorus that is almost irresistable. By the time that hook had finished, the whole vibe of the album just clicked together like a musical jigsaw. Okay, the music isn’t the smartest or the most diverse, but it’s excellently produced and very pleasing to listen to. The vocals do sound very much like some other american bands of the moment (see MGMT for details) when singing, but combine that with the eloquent, sometimes tongue tied rapping and you get something that can’t fail to excite, especially when turned up loud. This is party music, end of....full text

Iglu or Hartly, persuaded their many female friends to display various body parts on this album's sleeve, while the band themselves show off their bare rumps. Safe to assume, then, that I & H are party boys who'd rather have another beer than get in touch with their feminine sides. So why don't they sound like the Blink 182-style mess you would expect? Their debut is crisp electro-rock with a big hook in every tune, and lyrics that present them as a bunch of civic-minded young fellows. Violent and Young and their current hit, In This City, deplore youth crime and applaud self-improvement, and Jarvis Anderson's weedy rapping only heightens the earnestness. We'll See buries the vocals under layers of distortion, but is no less catchy for that....full text
