The Lemonheads - Varshons reviewBetween "Mrs. Robinson" and "My Hero Zero," covers have accounted for some of the Lemonheads' most memorable moments. So aging alt-rock pin-up Evan Dando doing a full covers album seems almost seems too obvious. And for the most part, Varshons is pleasantly predictable, with celebrity cameos (Kate Moss, Liv Tyler) and selections from legendary rakes Leonard Cohen and Townes Van Zandt that practically qualify as typecasting. But the countrified take on GG Allin's "Layin' Up with Linda" provides a moment of effective shock value, and improbable redemption arrives with the closing track: Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful." It feels like the perfect requiem for 1993....full text

Throughout The Lemonheads long history there has been a rich vein of cover versions, from Proud Scum's I Am A Rabbit on their debut EP 'Laughing All The Way To The Cleaners' and 'Amazing Grace' on the Hate Your Friends album, right up until 'Outdoor Type' on Car Button Cloth and a whole plethora of covers on the accompanying singles.

However, with the exception of a few low key singles and his one live album, Dando seemed to have left the cover versions behind, which for some of us was a shame. It also coincided with him leaving the drugs behind and forgetting to turn the quality control on (let's be honest his last 2 albums excited about as much as beige wallpaper). And so it was with a mixture of excitement and trepidation that Varshons was popped into the CD player....full text

Cover albums are always that anomaly in an artist’s catalog. Some are radical reinventions of songs (Rage Against The Machine’s Renegades) and some are just plain garbage (Guns N’ Roses The Spaghetti Incident?), and then there are the few that just are middle of the road. Regardless, it’s always interesting to see where an artist goes with song selection.

In the case of Evan Dando, the mastermind behind the 90’s alt-rockers The Lemonheads, it’s not exactly clear why he chose the songs he did, but regardless, it’s a pretty breezy, albeit unnecessary listen.

Dando kicks off the cleverly titled Varshons with Gram Parsons tune, “I Just Can’t Take It Anymore”. It’s nothing too special or dramatic, pretty much just a straightforward country rock tune.

He tackles the G.G. Allin “Layin’ Up with Linda” as well as the classic Townes Van Zandt “Waiting Around To Die” in his best country drawl. Actress Liv Tyler shows up on the Leonard Cohen cut “Hey, That’s No Way To Say Goodbye” as does model Kate Moss on a synthed-out Arling and Cameron cover....full text
