| A quick look at the writing and production credits for Lionel Richie's latest reveals his obvious desire to connect with an audience too young to remember mid-'80s hits like "Dancing on the Ceiling" and "Hello." Akon, Ne-Yo, Stargate, "Tricky" Stewart and the-Dream all contribute to an album with an up-to-the-minute digital sheen. Yet thanks to Richie's confidently grown-up vocals and his consistently mature subject matter—here's a guy whose romantic timeline stretches past tonight to "Forever and a Day," as one track puts it—"Just Go" never sounds calculated or desperate. In fact, highlights like "I'm in Love" and "I'm Not Okay" showcase a cultivated cool—perhaps a first for this longtime champion of tenderness and devotion. ...full text |

Lionel Richie is a one-man service economy through much of “Just Go,” his solicitous new album. He wants to make sure you’re comfortable, fulfilled and secure in his devotion. “I am not okay/Unless you’re okay,” he declares in one ballad, “I’m Not Okay.” On the lightly Caribbean-flavored title track — produced by Akon and now on the Hot Adult Contemporary chart — he sings, “I’m here to take that stress from you.” Then he offers to cook a meal, make the bed and spirit you by sailboat to the Bahamas, where he’ll make good on the promise of a massage. “You” in this case is a placeholder for Mr. Richie’s core demographic, which skews overwhelmingly female, and generally older than any of his kids. But if that makes “Just Go” a textbook adult-contemporary album, it also lends credible emotional footing to the songs. It’s one reason that Mr. Richie doesn’t sound out of his element singing on tracks provided by contemporary R&B hit makers, complete with up-to-the-minute production....full text |

| “Hello.” “Three Times a Lady.” “Brick House.” Lionel Richie is one of the most successful R&B/pop singer/songwriters of the past three decades. So you’d think that a new Lionel Richie album would feature new Lionel Richie songs. But Just Go doesn’t. At least not many. The superstar’s first album in three years is a solid, if not consistently energized tribute album to Lionel Richie. In a delicious bit of musical meta, he teams up with acolytes like Stargate, Akon, “Tricky” Stewart, and The-Dream on Just Go to, as Richie says in the liner notes, come up with “something Lionel Richie would do.” Which sort of makes Just Go a Lionel Richie record but without…you get the idea....full text |
