| But for a couple of moody rockers, Pete Yorn's Back & Fourth is largely acoustic, marrying '70s Cali folk-rock to the modern-day Nebraska sound (Bright Eyes collaborator Mike Mogis produced). That's the only marrying going on. With lines like ''I can never love you like the way you love me,'' Yorn's nursing a case of dumper's remorse, without being guilty or gleeful enough for real catharsis. | Tousled-haired crooner Pete Yorn approached Back & Fourth, his first album in three years, in a different musical environment. Sheltered by the surroundings of Middle America for the first time, Yorn shared his solitude with a group of musicians that took the instruments from his hands as he concentrated on writing the lyrics to some of the darkest, deepest songs of his career. The first single off the album, “Don’t Wanna Cry,” is a broken-heart anthem, and a melancholy voice throughout gives away to conflicting feelings about moving forward. Unfortunately, the singer-songwriter’s poignant lyrics get lost in the same tempo and sound found in his past three albums, offering us songs that lack distinctiveness and originality-and all we’re left with is a shallow perspective on Yorn’s troubled soul....full text |

| After a hot 2001 debut, Pete Yorn slumped on his second album and snoozed through his third. With help from Rick Rubin and Bright Eyes producer Mike Mogis, Yorn has found his voice on Back and Fourth, a mostly acoustic beauty recorded in Omaha, Nebraska, with musicians heard on Conor Oberst's Saddle Creek label. Mandolins flutter over Yorn's rasp on the delicate "Don't Wanna Cry," and a Byrds-like chime kick-starts "Country." The lyrics have more depth and sting. In the bossa nova-flavored "Paradise Cove" he lashes out at a lover, "When you talk, it makes me cringe/You want so bad to have meaning, but you're empty and draining."
