Eyes Set To Kill - The World Outside

   Sputnikmusic
When a band has the kind of success that Eyes Set to Kill did with their major label debut, Reach, it often means that their follow-up is going to contain more of the same. Fortunately, there are those bands that consider themselves actual artists and aren’t content to simply churn out variations of the original hit and Eyes Set to Kill is apparently one of them. According to the band’s website the goal on this album was to have critics, fans and the industry recognize Alexia Rodriguez’s growth and maturity as a songwriter and performing artist. Recognizing the band’s growth from their beginnings to this album is easily done and if that was their goal than mission accomplished. The World Outside has improved on every facet of the band’s sound and is almost certain to be looked back on as the album that foreshadowed better things to come.

On the most basic level, Eyes Set to Kill can be described as a post-hardcore or screamo band that utilize pop-sensibilities in order to create a sound that is as catchy as it is edgy. They also include an additional dynamic by using both male and female vocalists, but other than that minor difference their debut was just another enjoyable album full of pop hooks contrasted with a post-hardcore edge. As enjoyable as that album was, it wasn’t without its problems. The problem that Reach presented was that the enjoyable aspects were diluted by terrible screaming, a hollow production and some awkward songwriting. The World Outside fixes the last two issues and makes a noticeable improvement on the first one. The band wasn’t just content on fixing notable problems though; they also improved as musicians and injected a metallic edge that lends their songs a darker feel and a stronger sense of urgency....full text

I’ll be the first to admit that I was never a fan of the front woman in the music world unless maybe they were in the “pop” culture but through the years the ladies have stepped up and showed more integrity and passion for what they were doing in the metal and hard rock world. The band EYES SET TO KILL are one of the bands that made me take a re- listen to what a female fronted band could create and prove and let me say they shut me up with the negative thoughts I had. From there I opened my mind to other darker and heavier bands in this genre. But for now it is all about the band EYES SET TO KILL that came to me about a year ago or so with their debut album REACH, with sisters in the band and a aggressive side to the band thanks to one of the male members this band had it all great melodies, powerful and punchy heavier styles and storylines that were so emotional and reality driven. THE WORLD OUTSIDE is the newest effort from the band and the sound hasn’t really changed since REACH. The one thing was the stories based throughout each song were not as appealing to me as the last record was but still on a few of the tracks it’s obvious that the soul of storytelling is still there. I do love the aggressive screams of Brandon are still alive and kicking but he has also added some clean singing on the track DEADLY WEAPONS. With this addition it really compliments Alexia’s singing range very well. This track is upbeat, catchy and very easily could be a solid single. RISEN brings you back to the first album with the ultra aggressive nature and mixture of melody driven parts. The titles track THE WORLD OUTSIDE and the last tracks COME HOME are the two songs that really moved me through the lyrical content. It brings out a lot of emotional value to the singing quality and the way the listener perceives it. Songs, which convey emotion on many levels and aspects in life, EYES SET TO KILL aren’t creating new music and they aren’t doing anything insanely impossible but they do bring the realness and passion to each and every song they put to disc. So if you’re a first timer to this band or loved them from the beginning this CD is another great disc to add to your collection....full text

The World Outside is the sophomore CD for Tempe, Arizona's Eyes Set To Kill. The band was started by sisters Alexia (vocals, guitar) and Anissa (bass) Rodriguez. ESTK is rounded out by keyboardist/vocalist Brandon Anderson, guitarist Greg Kerwin and drummer Caleb Clifton.

Genre-wise, The World Outside has elements of metalcore, post-hardcore and rock. The songs are melodic, but also have an edge. Eyes Set To Kill alternates male screaming vocals and female melodic singing. They are pretty evenly distributed, although the singing probably gets a bit more exposure. Craig Mabbitt from Escape The Fate guests on "Deadly Weapons," and the male/female melodic singing is a nice change of pace.

ESTK varies tempos and intensities pretty well. Tracks like "Hour Glass" and "Wake Me Up" pack a pretty good punch, although there are mellower moments within those songs. The most accessible songs on The World Outside are the ones without screaming vocals, such as the title track and the album closer "Come Home," a piano based ballad....full text
