Demi Lovato - Here We Go Again

   Billboard
While some Disney artists rely heavily on Auto-Tune and layers of effects, Demi Lovato sounds best with stripped-down production. One example is "Catch Me," a perfect acoustic ballad found halfway through the 16-year-old singer's second album, "Here We Go Again." Lovato sings with more yearning than Jewel and better phrasing to boot. The listener can even hear Lovato put a grin into her voice when singing the line, "You've got me smiling in my sleep." "Every Time You Lie" swings like Maroon 5's brand of radio soul, while "World of Chances" could easily be heard from a stage at Lilith Fair. Along with some quiet surprises, there are also potential hits, including the first single/title track, where Lovato almost sounds like Kelly Clarkson's kid sister. Quiet or loud, rock or folk, Lovato is a natural talent who could really take flight after outgrowing Disney....full text

"American Idol" and Disney are the two strongest pop machines in music today. This week, two of their most promising talents released sophomore albums: "Camp Rock" star Demi Lovato follows up last year's "Don't Forget" with the brassy "Here We Go Again," and 2007 "Idol" winner Jordin Sparks stakes her claim with "Battlefield."

So, which one will become the summer jam record, perfect for blasting at slumber parties and Forever 21 sales? The good news for the artists is that the world of teen pop is a magnanimous one. Fans are encouraged to listen to all the competitors; nary a beef is in sight.

Sparks might be the "Idol" alumna, but it's Lovato who's most influenced by Kelly Clarkson's style. Even the title of Lovato's '80s-inspired "Remember December" could be taken as a vote for Clarkson's maligned full-length "My December."...full text

Like Britney Spears before her, Demi Lovato pretty much admits in the title of her sophomore album that she's serving up more of the same the second time around, but unlike Britney, that may not have been Demi's intention. For Here We Go Again, Lovato makes a relatively clean break from the Jonas Brothers, who penned much of her debut, Don't Forget, drafting sensitive AAA singer/songwriters Jon McLaughlin and John Mayer presumably to give Lovato a bit of mature veneer, a subtle shift buried underneath the relentlessly cheerful Radio Disney production and Lovato's irrepressible spunk. Both sonic characteristics tend to camouflage Demi's biggest moves away from teen pop -- the fussy balladeering of "Falling Over Me," the mock-Mraz jazz-pop "Every Time You Lie," the sober soul searching of the Mayer collaboration "World of Chances," the Celtic flair of "Gift of a Friend" -- which also happen to be the very things that make Here We Go Again not quite as much fizzy fun as Don't Forget. Not quite as much fun, but still fun, particularly when Lovato tears into hooky power pop like "Here We Go Again," "Solo," "Remember December," and the stomping "So Far So Great," the theme song to the TV show Sonny with a Chance, songs that are ideally matched to Lovato's adolescent energy and spirit, which remain her most appealing qualities....full text
