Felix Da Housecat - He Was King
| Pitchfork |
|
Felix da Housecat was unlucky enough to release his biggest hit at the height of one of the more ignoble fads in dance music's recent history. But Felix's "Silver Screen Shower Scene" sounds as good now as in the days of electroclash for one simple reason: His teenage training cutting tough-as-nails jack fodder for post-Frankie Knuckles Chicagoans meant "Silver Screen" felt honestly tough, rather than the feigned brutalism of those who wouldn't come within spitting distance of either gabba or a gospel a cappella. It's tempting to say that Felix's music has been progressively less interesting as the decade's worn on because he refuses to let go of the context that briefly made him a pan-genre star. He Was King was described in the advance press as an "electronic pop" record, but Felix was never particularly good at "pop," while he positively fucking excelled at floor-ready craziness without much chance of crossing over. Like his track-happy peers in the Relief/Cajual era, Felix would have been barred from the Brill Building, but you also suspect he wouldn't have cared. And as for his later career, well, it was easy to look like Phil friggin' Spector when your competition was Avenue D....full text |

| you have visited the site over the last fortnight then the chances are you already saw the video to album track 'Kickdrum' and maybe you even picked up the Free Download too?If that wasn't enough to convince you that FDHC's brand new album is a killer work of Italo, electro, house, pop music art then let me ask you if you have heard of and like any of the following artists; Rex The Dog, The Knife, Miss Kittin & The Hacker, Hell, TokTok Vs Sofyo? If the answer is yes then make sure you get this when it drops in August. If not then have a listen to the tracks below. They will doubtless help clarify things. For the record my favourite track is 'We' but there are many many outstanding dancefloor fillers on here. I just chose that one because it reminded me of the Knife's pop credibilities.4.5/5YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE: Miss Kittin & The Hacker 'Two'Estella SatisLISTEN:...full text |

Since effectively inventing the genre of electroclash, Felix Da Housecat has enjoyed a fair amount of success. Even though he hasn’t been particularly mainstream (from what I know at least), he has a loyal following, and I for one have definitely enjoyed his albums. He seems to have a sense of humour and manages to implement that into his work, but whilst also containing some full-on electro tracks. And his new album is pretty similar. We got it as an advanced copy last weak but since then its leaked, but you should buy it even so!. It starts off with Felix’s dedication to Prince, and on first listen I wasn’t much of a fan but its really grown on me. It starts the album off very nicely and relaxingly and sets the theme for the majority of the rest of the songs. After that comes ‘Plastik Fantastik’, a song I’d consider among his joking songs, for some reason I just find it amusing. Its still a good song regardless though. After the rather low-key start comes the club ‘banger’ ‘Kickdrum’. Before I’d heard the whole album I thought it was a really good tune, and tbf you can’t deny the synths etc are pretty epic. But, it doesn’t really fit with the rest of the album IMO. But after that comes ‘Do We Move Your World’ and ‘We’, the latter of which is probably my favourite song off the album. Both are just generally upbeat, feel-good tracks with that trademark Felix ‘wobble’ with the synths. The 3 tracks following that are in a similar mould, all very good songs....full text |
