Say Please - Say Please reviewBetter than expected doesn't always mean good, just as pleasant surprise doesn't always equate staying power. Anyone familiar with the role-playing "Handle With Care" cover from Jenny Lewis' solo debut has just cause to be suspicious of Monsters of Folk, a folk-pop Voltron comprised of Jim James of My Morning Jacket, Matt Ward of M. Ward and She & Him, and Conor Oberst. But "Say Please" is at the very least pleasing. Producer and fourth Monster Mike Mogis includes a few Jeff Lynne-style production ticks-- especially that steady acoustic strum that forms the song's rhythmic foundation-- that recall that notorious Wilburys cover, but in general, he makes it a little louder, tougher, more rambunctious. Despite a guitar solo more notable for its length than for its volume or inventiveness, that rough-around-the-edges sound suits the project nicely, if only for drawing Oberst and James out of their band-based comfort zones and into a track that seems to lean more toward Ward. Predictably, they take turns on the verses and sing the choruses, but they also playfully trade off "darlin'"s and "please"'s throughout, and James and Ward add some interesting harmonic textures to Oberst's leads. Vocally, it's largely democratic, showcasing each of the singers solo and in unison, but it lacks the pageantry that slays so many supergroups. These guys sounds like just another band, and thank goodness for that....full text

The Monsters of Folk—the all-star, Traveling Wilbury's-style affair featuring Jim Jams, M. Ward, Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis I reported on last month—shuffle along on the spirited verse-trading rocker "Say Please," the first track from their self-titled debut due out September 22nd. My only question is, who decides who gets to do the soloing? I'm hoping James and Ward duel it out on a track: giant anthemic rock riffs against John Fahey-esque finger-picked licks.

They made noise in 2004 with the “An Evening With: Bright Eyes, Jim James and M. Ward” tour, but on September 22nd, Monsters of Folk — an, ahem, supergroup comprised of Conor Oberst, Mike Mogis, My Morning Jacket’s James (or, perhaps Yim Yames) and She & Him’s Ward — will finally release a full-length album, recorded over two years and produced by Mogis. Said to be “as stunning and storied as you would expect it to be,” get a taste now by visiting the band’s official site to download a free MP3 of “Say Please.” (Simply type the word “please” into the request form.)...full text
