Andrew W.K. - 55 Cadillac reviewIt may not be the best move for the first album released on your vanity label to be 38 minutes of piano doodling. It's even worse when said doodling is improvised, unaccompanied and entirely aimless—less an expression of newfound artistic freedom than something spit out to fulfill a contract. The fact that Andrew W.K. is a classically trained pianist has been floating around from the beginning of his career, an amusing bit of trivia that seemed to fly directly in the face of his overcharged, fist-pumping persona. He pushed this further on 2003's The Wolf, recording all of the instrumental parts himself. Yet none of this is enough preparation for 55 Cadillac, which, billed as "new age," takes inconsequentiality and formlessness to an extent that few albums reach.

If W.K.'s aim was to prove once and for all his capabilities beyond the insistent plinking of a single note, then mission accomplished. But beyond that, all the album manages to do is crystallize the sound of someone playing a piano: not especially well, not especially badly—mostly just messing around. There's an automotive theme to all this, which you can tell because of the title and the cover, as well as the fact that there are engine sound effects between each track. How this is otherwise related to the musician's car is a mystery....full text

The career of Andrew W.K. has taken many unpredictable turns, considering the head-banging, pop metal of 2001's I Get Wet that was AWK's first introduction to the world. The follow-up would be similar in tone and spirit, but Andrew W.K's energetic, eternally optimistic personality opened the door for opportunities in television and even work as a motivational speaker. In recent years, he has continued to make music, but only with limited availability in the States, including the vinyl only release of the more pop leaning Close Calls With Brick Walls and The Japan Covers, an album of J-pop songs with Andrew W.K. giving his own renditions. For those familiar with AWK's adventurous, love-for-life attitude, it's not really that surprising that he would record a heavily improvisational "new-age instrumental solo piano concept album," which is exactly what 55 Cadillac is. It is exactly the kind of leftfield move that is true to his joyous philosophy and multi-instrumental background and may alieante those looking for more beer commerical anthems. The album also promises to make listeners feel like they're in the car with him and that he's playing piano just for them, so says Andrew....full text

A four-letter acronym – SSPI – adorns the cover of Andrew W.K’s latest. Super-Sweaty Party Initiator? Swell Solo Party Incubator? There are a few possibilities, but the P’s got to stand for Party, right? Wrong. Mr Wilkes-Krier instead humbly presents his Spontaneous Solo Piano Improvisations. That’s right – a man known for aural testosterone like Party Hard, Party Till You Puke and Party (You Shout) and, more recently, a kid’s television show entitled Destroy! Build! Destroy! (in which children are given – I shit you not – rocket launchers), has decided his new venture should consist of eight unstructured, unembellished piano ad-libs with nary a bloody nose or chugging guitar in sight. If you’ve previously dismissed him as a lunk-headed rock-gonk then you might be surprised by his piano proficiency, but novelty chutzpah aside, it’s difficult to recommend such an anachronistic project to even the most avid acolyte....full text
