Reuben liked a whinge. Despite their obvious affability and a smattering of fanatical support, few bands have bemoaned their lack of success through song as frequently. ‘Return Of The Jedi’ on their patchy second album Very Fast Very Dangerous is seven minutes of bile spewed over the subjects of illegal downloaders, working part-time as a waiter and the expense of making videos. The title of this posthumous b-sides and rarities compilation echoes the mood of tired resignation that bled from their sudden dissolution last year. I put Reuben in with the peculiarly southern group of early Noughties British nu rock groups, who created a more palatable, punky noise out of the down-tuned guitars and angst-dipped lyrics flogged by the execrable American bands of the era. Reuben sit somewhere between short-lived success stories Hundred Reasons and Hell Is For Heroes and forgotten also-rans like Vex Red, Crackout and Fraid. Another thing Reuben did more than most in their lyrics was namecheck influences: Glassjaw, Every Time I Die, and Helmet were all mentioned on album tracks. Reuben lacked the screamy edge of the former pair and the macho muscle of the latter, but made up for it with a killer ear for catchy choruses and a clear attention to detail in their music....full text |

| Reuben never really got the huge fame they deserved, so to see this double disc of fan service get a release is quite surprising. The title of the double disc + DVD is revealing; the band only disassembled in the first place because they needed to go out and get jobs. They never made it off the indies, instead, the band took the option of forming their own label, Hideous Records, to release their last full-length, In Nothing We Trust. Very admirable, for the band to do this- it works for the RX Bandits -but for a minor player in a very big scene to essentially fund themselves, whilst increasingly possible, will usually result in failure. The band are on an indefinite hiatus at the moment- we all know what that means, but, hopefully once they've made some cash they'll start playing music again and sign to a decent label....full text |

Musically, Reuben sit somewhere around the Foo Fighters & Biffy Clyro territory - angst power-metal for the more discerning of snail-raisers across the land. They have also built up a considerably partisan band of followers during their short history, and although they have announced a hiatus (NOT a split) their music lives on. This set of 3 discs pulls in all of their non-album tracks, some singles and demos from the early days including the entire "Pilot EP", including the original's initial hidden track, "Shambles". As a package, it can't be faulted - a good place to start or a detailed round-up of their most potent songs, including new single "Blitzkrieg", you can see it either way. My problem with the album is the sheer length of the thing - Camberley's young guns certainly wrote a lot of songs, aside from the albums that is, that this feels almost overwhelming. It all blands out into a seemless run of noise that tested my patience after 15 songs or so - "Numb At Four In The Morning" was a welcome strum-drum break from the bombardment. But, it's so chock full of single versions, rarities, live 'Truck Festival' excerpts and coughs and sneezes to pep up proceedings, that by the time you get to disc 2, Gordon Brown has joined the Tories, Jenson Button has won his 6th F1 Championship and Reuben have reformed and played Wembley with Them Crooked Vultures in support - well, it could happen...... A further DVD with another 24 performances ties it all up like a huge joint of ham hock that you got for Christmas and you don't know what to do with. I'm all for value, but this release will appeal to fans only - there is just not enough variety to pull in outsiders....full text |
