 In the 40 years since Pink Floyd burst on to the London scene, initially as part of a vibrant underground that included folk, jazz and experimental musicians, its members and ex-members have released solo albums. These have ranged from Syd Barrett's psychedelic songwriting to Roger Waters' misanthropic wails, via Nick Mason's odd, but musically interesting Fictitious Sports, basically Carla Bley's 1970s band with a different drummer. There's a moment just a little over two minutes into David Gilmour (music)'s "On an Island" that illustrates exactly why so many of us spent our college years listening to Pink Floyd.
It happens on the moody instrumental "Castellorizon," as Gilmour strikes a note that sounds like it shouldn't come from a guitar. It sounds so much like a voice, possessing so much emotion and personality, that it serves as a calling card....full text |

Released on his 60th birthday, David Gilmour'sthird solo album highlights a somewhat leisurely work rate(!)but should definitively seal his place as the tasteful one in the Pink Floyd.
Harsher critics may point out the similarity between this and more famous Floydian moments (the title track, for instance, is a kind of "Wish You Were Animals") yet what Island... really confirms is that all the BEST post-Syd bits by the far-out foursome came from the mind and fingers of our Dave.
