All That Remains - The Fall of Ideals reviewBeing a 16 year old looking for a new sound in music is a tough job. Music is constantly changing and progressing with new sounds. But going back to basic metal is just what All That Remains has accomplished with The Fall of Ideals. This band has brought back the metal from the time of Metallica and Slayer. It's no wonder this album was number 75 on the Billboard 200.
The Fall of Ideals is such a great album because of the fact that although it reminds one of the 80's metal, it incorporates new elements of metal. From beginning to end, there is a nonstop onslaught of heavy riffs and melodic solos.
The album starts with a deep breath and then the loud scream of vocalist Philip Labonte in "This Calling." Underneath you can hear the sppedy footwork of drummer Shannon Lucas. Fast guitarist Oli Herbert and Mike Martin play their riffs, and the build up to the solo includes an intense drum roll. But when Oli begins to play the solo, a melody calms down the song just long enough to fool the listener into peace.
The next masterpiece would definitely be the power of "We Stand." With the fats shredding in the solo any metal fan will be pleased with this song. At track 7, we find the song "Six," which, while incorporating the footwork of Lucas and the guttural roar of Labonte, has an unmistakable entrance followed by one of the most peaceful solos of the whole album.
The final jewl of this album is the song "The Air That I Breathe." With the fast playing of the guitarists and Lucas playing his drums like and expert, we finally notice Jeanne Sagan's bass right before the solo. At the solo, it begins peacefully until Herbert begins shredding like a master.
All in all, this album is a great listen. Although there is a lack of bass, it is still a great weapon in the arsenal of any metal fan....full text

Once a band has been around for a while, they find their level and generally stay there. All That Remains has been together for nearly a decade and their level was as a decent metalcore band. With their third album they have shattered those expectations and risen to an entirely new level. Whether this album is the perfect storm where everything came together or they continue at this high level remains to be seen, but they hit a home run with The Fall Of Ideals.

All That Remains have broadened their style and on this album you'll hear everything from thrash to death metal to traditional metal to metalcore. The songs have tons of melody and memorable riffs, but also gallop along at maximum intensity. The dual guitars shine with crunchy leads, intricate interplay and creative solos....full text

What’s with me and metalcore, everytime i check a couple of albums for review, one for sure is metalcore…well that or hardcore, yeah, well besides my nagging, All That Remains is a pretty by the numbers metalcore, fast and hard with the oh so predictable clean chorus, i believe this is their second album, but to be honest it’s the first time i had the pleasure. So let’s have a looksee on “The Fall of Ideals”.

Well well, isn’t this the most “radio friendly” metalcore track I’ve heard in some time, if “This Calling” is not their single, my name isn’t fiend (it isn’t, but that’s beside the point hehehe), pure straight blasting metalcore, to a simple and catchy (yeah it rhymes) clean chorus, with some blasting underneath, that …well at least it gives some edge, next comes “Not Alone” and I’m already on that “oh damn are this guy really talking about how they are so miserable, they lost their girlfriend or whatnot” shit me, that’s so 90’s, well beat me with a stick if it isn’t almost identical with the last track, hell they both clock at about 3:30, funny, well both aren’t bad, more like, someone has done this better somewhere for sure, kind of thing.

“It Dwells in Me” is kinda weak on it’s knees, yeah because in this kind of music it doesn’t matter what you do between the chorus, if the chorus is catchy the music is fine, even though this one has some interesting guitar work followed up by some hardcore punching, maybe it’s not that weak, “We Stand” is nothing great, “Whispers (I Hear your)” is the same formula different lyrics, “The Weak Willed” has a little more hardcore bite, with no clean chorus, but they sure sugar coat it on the end… yeah giving a bit of after taste, “Six” pops up with the predictable blasting to a more clean track, with some sissy voice off, then building up to a some rock like whatever, it’s not that good, “Become the Catalyst” has a more interesting guitar solo, chorus sucks, “The Air That I Breathe” just sucks, “Empty Inside” is a patch work and again follows their formula to the letter, “Indictment” is again one by the numbers, nothing to add....full text
