Jackson 5 - I Want You Back! Unreleased reviewIf you’ve ever wondered how great it might be to hear a slowed-down version of “ABC” that lacks all the youthful charm of the original, this set of previously unreleased Jackson 5 recordings is for you. Timed, we’re told, to the 40th anniversary of the family band’s debut single for Motown (uh, okay),

I Want You Back! feels a lot less useful than some of the other archival artifacts that have flooded record stores following Michael Jackson’s death this summer. As is often the case with this kind of from-the-vault collection, it isn’t hard to see why most of these tunes weren’t released in the first place: “That’s How Love Is” rides a bouncy beat but lacks a memorable hook, and “Love Comes in Flavors” never really sells its clunky candy-store metaphor. “Buttercup,” a funky psych-soul gem penned by Stevie Wonder, is the sole keeper, with a lovely African-inspired guitar line and juicy close-harmony vocals....full text

Who doesn’t love the Jackson 5? Ever since I first heard “Ben”, I’ve been hooked. Since then they’ve come out with hit after hit and have shown the world just how talented they are. That’s why I was so exited to hear that this CD with unreleased songs was coming out. How cool to be able to rediscover the Jackson 5!

OUR REVIEW

Listening to this CD really brought back memories. I love the new versions of some old classics like “ABC” and “Never Can Say Goodbye”. It put a whole new spin on the songs and made them feel like they were brand new again. The other 8 never released tunes were just as great as the classics. My favorite song was “That’s How Love Is” which showcased Micheal Jackson’s talent in true style.

The best part of this CD is the way these songs showcased all the brother’s talents. They each had their turn to shine in the spotlight. What a great way to rediscover a group of talented brothers that made history....full text

You get exactly what is says on the label – unreleased songs from a young Jackson group and an even younger Michael. First out is the extremely rare medley 'I Want You Back/ABC/The Love You Save' which was, apparently, recorded for their tv spots.

Michael would sing live over the instrumental track it seems. With the alternate tracks like 'Never Can Say Goodbye' and 'ABC', their second single, there’s 'Buttercup', written and produced by Stevie Wonder no less for 1973 release, which was around the time the brothers backed him on 'You Haven’t Done Nothing'.

Bobby Taylor, who first bought the brothers to Motown, produced the Curtis Mayfield penned 'Man’s Temptation' recorded in ’70, and his own co-written song 'Listen I’ll Tell You How'. Smashing stuff. The Corporation (Berry Gordy, Deke Richards, Freddie Perren, Alphonso Mizell) who were the brainchild behind the brothers’ first million sellers, are included here with the unreleased 'Love Comes In Different Flavors' and 'That’s How Love Is'.

Let me tell you, it doesn’t get much better than this. The vocals are innocent and youthful, adventurous yet hesitant. Michael’s diction is often polite and precise (kinda cute too), yet it’s so apparent this young boy had an innate soulful edge, an emotional styling and outpouring of feelings that a boy his age shouldn’t have been able to relate to, let alone sing about with such intenseness. This cd is history in the making and really is essential listening. Thanks Harry Weiner!...full text
