Austrian Death Machine - Double Brutal reviewIf there's anyone who knows about making a follow-up that lives up to its predecessor, it's Arnold Schwarzenegger. When he said the famous line "I'll be back" in 1984's The Terminator, he meant it; he came back seven years later with one of the best action movies of all time, Terminator 2: Judgment Day. The guy also managed to go from being award the title of Mr. Universe to leading a blockbuster acting career to becoming the governor of California.

It only makes sense, then, that Austrian Death Machine, the solo project of As I Lay Dying vocalist Tim Lambesis that pays tribute to Schwarzenegger, would put out a sophomore effort that measures up to the original. Double Brutal is a two-disc effort, and although the duration of both CDs could have fit onto one disc, they are separated into two. The first disc follows suit of the debut, Total Brutal, with songs written about Arnold Schwarzenegger films, while the second features covers of songs that can be vaguely related to Schwarzenegger flicks.

The songs continue to follow a simple formula: Lambesis writes a song revolving around a chorus containing a classic quote from a Schwarzenegger film, sets the silly lyrics to a thrashy metalcore tune with a breakdown, and then has a talented friend play a blazing guitar solo on the track. The testosterone-fueled tunes are catchy with anthemic choruses and crisp, clean production, and they'll get your head banging to the shred-tastic riffs. Interspersed throughout the discs are skits featuring banter between Lambesis and Ahhnold (impersonated by comedian/voice actor Josh Robert Thompson). Although there's some funny lampooning of the genre, I found myself skipping over them after a couple of listens....full text

Just what the world was missing, a tribute “band” to the greatest action hero of our time, “The Governator” Arnold Schwarzenegger. This band, however, isn’t much of a band at all. This is basically just a side project for As I Lay Dying’s frontman, Tim Lambesis with the help of Chad Ackermann providing the voice of The Oak. Double Brutal is the follow-up to the 2008’s, Total Brutal. Creatively titled the album is a double disc featuring all originals for the first half, and covers that relate to Schwarzenegger movies make up the 2nd disc.

I don’t know where to even start for this. It pretty much sounds like I expected. Musically it’s mostly metalcore but at times contains some pretty solid, straight forward thrash, and then will completely change into your standard deathcore. For just one man making all the music, the songs came together rather nicely and are somewhat enjoyable. Since this is an Arnold themed band, it would not be complete without your standard inputs from the California governor throughout each song. The skits are the highlights of the entire album as we get to listen to Ackermann, who sounds pretty identical to the main source, spout off utter nonsense that is in true Arnold fashion. You’ll get a heavy dose of your favorite Arnold lines, so don’t worry.

The second disc contains nothing but covers that in some way relate to Arnold movies. Metallica’s “Trapped Under Ice”, Megadeth;’s “Killing Is My Business…” and Judas Priest’s “Hell Bent For Leather” are the highlights of the second disc. Musically the songs are pretty much a clone of the originals but with the Arnold interjections they definitely take on a comedy element all their own....full text

Austrian Death Machine is a joke. It’s even a funny joke. With Arnold being the governor of California as well as the cheesiest movie star of our times, if not all-time, as well as a huge internet sensation, it is not at ALL a surprise that someone is doing this. (Though, according to Wikipedia there is another band that has been doing this for 7 years longer than Austrian Death Machine.)

Musically, Austrian Death Machine is pretty much a metalcore/deathcore band, though honestly when it comes to joke bands, it’s pretty much OK. I mean, the riffing is solid, the guest soloists are really solid and the lyrics are great (“It’s simple, if it jiggles it’s fat!”). But get ready for all of the trappings of modern metalcore/deathcore if you go out and check out this album. It’s got the hyper-replaced drums, hardcore vocals and breakdowny kind of stuff. But, it really does have excellent solos throughout the whole album.

The segue tracks are pretty funny and the dude who does the Ahhnold impressions does a really good job, I have to say. But, of course, as my critique of Swashbuckle pointed out: how long of a shelf-life does this stuff have? I mean, even the pirate topic is definitely more fruitful than Arnold over time, right? Double Brutal has Tim (from As I Lay Dying who also does everything but the guitar solos and the Arnold impressions) digging up material that he’s already used once (“Who Is Your Daddy and What Does He Do?”) again, and I can’t imagine that it has shelf life beyond one more record....full text
