Some fans might be wondering what happened to this band, but most probably realize that they’ve never been consistent in the first place. My Dying Bride’s career has been full of highs and lows, and people just need to accept it as a hazard of following the band. Besides, history has shown that they always bounce back after an album or two anyway – it simply turns out that they’re not ready to bounce back just yet. In fact, it seems they’re not even ready to stop circling further into the depths of mediocrity, as this EP is a new low that thankfully only lasts four songs. The EP opens with the track “Bring Me Victory” from the band’s 2009 release, For Lies I Sire. This song shares a lot in common with the musical approach found on Like Gods of the Sun, except without any of the enjoyment. It’s a short, straight-up metal track that has the potential to be tolerable if it wasn’t for Aaron’s vocals. In fact, it’s Aaron’s vocals that end up being the downfall of this album. The following track is a cover of “Scarborough Fair” – one of the most overly-covered tracks in recent memory. This song has been played by everyone from Sarah Brightman and Hayley Westenra to Queensryche and Leaves’ Eyes. I mention these artists not only to display the range of people that have covered the song, but also to hint to the fact that it’s a song for strong vocalists. Aaron is not a strong vocalist and the song falls flat because of it. The following track is a cover of the Swans’ “Failure”. This song features minimal musical accompaniment which effectively leaves Aaron front-and-center warbling like a drunken Elmer Fudd. The EP ends with a live version of “Vast Choirs” that is pretty good, but by the time it starts it’s already too little and too late....full text |

| My Dying Bride follows its road and it's way to do promotion, which means that you can find a new (or more) EP after or before every new album. This time the title of the new EP of the British doomsters is Bring Me Victory and features three songs (two are covers) and one video shot at Graspop 2008. The first thing which comes to my mind when I listen to this record is that My Dying Bride wanted to have fun with this EP. They covered one British popular traditional ballad "Scarborough Fair" and a song of the Swans when in general EP give "more" original unreleased songs. The covers are not bad at all, absolutely not in the pure spirit of the Doom Death Metal that MDB uses to play in general but at least that's a bit new if you see what I mean. On the other hand it doesn't give anything special and outstanding too, the songs are cool ok but but not really different of the original versions so will you have to buy the EP just for it and for the video clip of "Bring Me Victory"? I don't think so. It's impressive however to see how My Dying Bride can be good when it comes to release new products. Even for a EP the packaging is really classy and at least full (a video, a live recording, three songs… that's not so bad after all). Bring Me Victory can be a good buy if you're a die-hard fan of the band but other than that it's in my opinion useless to get this album which don't really give "something else"....full text |

| If you have not picked up a copy of My Dying Bride's For Lies I Sire then you must do so but first sink your Doom Metal teeth into this tasty EP that brings you a few surprises from the band by way of an album track, two covers, a live tune and a video. Enticing right? You would be correct in that assumption because while we get a powerful track from the new release with this EP's title track "Bring Me Victory", it's the covers that remind us of why this band remains so important to the Doom Metal genre and Metal in general. First they give us their own version of the traditional song "Scarborough Fair" which works rather well and give the fans that enjoyed the Queensryche and Leaves' Eyes rendition another Metal one to add to their music player. Its slower and more cryptic than the other renditions and works really, really well. Next up comes the cover of the Swans tune "Failure". Admitedly this was a band that I never really followed but MDB does a powerful rendition of the tune that is now branded with their own unique signature. We get a live tune which originally appeared on their As The Flower Withers CD and was recorded in Belgium in 2008. This tune does not appear on the bands live CD/DVD An Ode To Woe so having it here will not give you any duplication that might prove annoying. The video for "Bring Me Victory" must be played in your PC or MAC and I guess would work in a DVD player that allows you to use media such as this, but since mine does not, I was left to using the laptop/desktop to enjoy it. While the video can be enjoyed online for free and doesn't necessarily need to be owned unless you are a maniac for the bands stuff, at least by purchasing this EP you get a few additional cool treats. The artwork is best described as "bleak" on the two page foldout and while I would have liked a little more to be presented I will not make this an issue after absorbing the fine EP. Bon appétit....full text |
