Callahan - Summer Sampler reviewSpringfield, Ohio’s Callahan have incredible potential, but these four young men, brothers Wes (drummer) and Brad Comer (guitarist), bassist Jake Sims, and vocalist/guitarist Ryan Clay, have yet to find a signature sound of their own. Some of you who spent time at the Vans Warped Tour this summer might recognize them as one of many hardworking bands armed with an iPod and demos trying to sell their music to anybody who would give it a listen. Though their work ethic is incredible and commendable, their summer sampler, featuring 3 sun-soaked songs with solid pop-punk hooks, unfortunately doesn’t cover a lot of new ground. Both musically and lyrically, the tracks would fit perfectly on anything We the Kings or Boys Like Girls have put out. It remains to be seen if the group has a sound that is distinctly their own. The first two tracks, "The Dive" and "Anyways" simply struggle to find relevance in a genre already saturated with songs built to satisfy a sweet tooth.

Callahan seem to still be finding what works for their band and each of the three tracks contains elements that could be fit for a very popular full-length, but only with tweaking. The band should focus on both developing their thoughts better within the lyrics, and cultivating the sort of depth that will come from the band's personal growth as musicians. On “Finding My Way”, the lone ballad and stand-out track, Clay really shines in his ability to control his vocal and contribute a powerfully emotional element to the song, but the sampler as a whole could use more of that honesty. This reviewer believes that Callahan have the musical chops and determination to make a name for themselves in this scene, but if they want the staying power, they will need to find something to bring forth in their music that sets them apart from the rest of the pack....full text

What dragged me into listen to the band Callahan was the fact that they stated on their Myspace that they as a band wanted to “stand out from all the rest and last long enough to make an impact on the music scene.” On several occasions the band Callahan has been rated the number one unsigned band on PureVolume. Currently the band is streaming their Summer Sampler on both PureVolume and Myspace, and with songs in the half million and quarter million hits, I was hoping to be surprised with a new sound in my ears.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to hear anything new. They sound kind of like a cross between Boys Like Girls gone A Day To Remember. The scene that Callahan wanted to break down is merely an eager attempt at getting more listeners.

The Sampler begins with the song The Dive. The lyrics are well written, and flow beautifully. But unfortunately, I still get that Boys Like Girls vibe to the actual song. The mold they wanted to break is clearly not presented in this song. Despite this fact, the song is still alright.

Finding My Way is a song that has a much slower pace to it, and is probably my favorite off of the sampler. The lyrics are advanced and executed exactly how they should be. Its acoustic sound fits perfectly with the vibe of the lyrics. It’s a completely ideal love song.

The songs Dress To Impress and This One’s for the History Books is a cross between A Day To Remember and every other pop-punk band you hear on MTV. It’s disappointing to say the least, but the attempt at a different sound was obviously made. When Morning Comes sounds like a completely different band playing. It’s fast paced, and even has an electronic sound to it. If Callahan broke any mold whatsoever, it would be through this song....full text
