Hurricane Chris - Unleashed reviewHurricane Chris can lay claim to being one of the most successful digital artists of the 21st century, with his hit single "A Bay Bay" being downloaded over 3.5 million times as a song or ringtone. Commercial success not being equivalent to artistic merit, our writer Justin 'Tha Shiznute' Chandler found his debut album "51/50 Ratchet" to be more than a little bit underwhelming. That being said the amount of focus and determination Chris shows as a young artist in a crowded marketplace and his willingness to embrace new media distribution make him a hip-hop entrepreneur to watch, and Adam Bernard's interview shows we haven't stopped paying attention. To that end we present "Unleashed," released late in December '09 but packed with plenty of potential to pop in 2010 off the strength of the Play N Skillz produced lead single "Halle Berry (She's Fine)."

"Well let's get ratchet, let's get ratchet
Look at her prettier than Halle and thicker than Janet
She said she like all of my club bangers I be jammin
Told her to bust it open, let me see what's really happenin
She the ship and I'm the the captain, I'm the captain
Booty bigger than the Pacific Ocean that make me happy
And I'm all the way in yo' city, I'm from Louisiana
So you gotta show me how yo' city do it for the camera
Make it drop and bring it back to the top, I'm no amateur
Girl you can give it to me, you ain't nothin I can't handle
She just got out the shower, smellin like a scented candle
And I'm fin' ta hit her backwards, have her slidin off the mattress"

There are at least four things Hurricane Chris has going for him on "Halle Berry" - a catchy and memorable chorus, a charismatic delivery reminiscent of Lil Wayne, descriptive lyrics that paint a very visual picture, and a simple beat with strong drums perfect for the club. Unlike many similar Southern songs, "Halle Berry" is deliberately slow without being deliberately screwed, making it very easy to picture the fine woman Chris describes moving her booty in slow motion. Of course you don't even have to imagine it - you can watch the video on YouTube HERE and as of this writing the video has been viewed over 600K times since last April. If Chris' online popularity continues to hold then The Inkredibles produced "Headboard" should do equally well. You can accuse Chris of being a one trick pony when it comes to his sexual raps, but he and guests Mario & Plies do that one trick quite well....full text

In the two years since his debut album, the now 20-year-old Hurricane Chris has done some growing up, but you wouldn’t say he’s matured. Unleashed is a Dirty South party record that’s nasty as it wants to be, with plenty of bedroom bragging and booty worship. Fans expecting a fairly clean follow-up to his breakthrough hit “A Bay Bay” instead get the extra horny "Headboard," which steals a couple good ideas from Lil Wayne’s “Mrs. Officer” while adding special guest Plies for that street authenticity. Better still is the more Southern-fried “Halle Berry (She’s Fine),” with Dallas-based production team Play-N-Skillz bringing that ratchet beat as Chris imagines the Dirty South dream girl with “Even though she’s got class/She listen to UGK.” Some of his insults are fun too, as “I’m Back” gives up “I spit the hard lyrics/That make the listeners bite down/And to me you sound like a woman/You need a nightgown,” but this pimp from Shreveport sounds best when swaggering and rarely steps out of his comfort zone. Knowing this makes for a limited listen, the executive producers stop the track count at ten, giving hip-hop hedonists just what they paid for with none of that tedious “and then some.”...full text

Hurricane Chris, the baby-faced Louisiana rapper behind the 2007 novelty hit "A Bay Bay," is now fully 20 years old, and his second studio album is wall-to-wall hedonism: boasts about club conquests and squeaking bedsprings delivered in couplets like "Girl, I know you heard about how I be switching the position … Work it, work it, stick it, stick it." Chris has a syrupy drawl that luxuriates in long vowel sounds, and he brings goofy horndog charm to the hit "Halle Berry (She's Fine)." But most of the time he sounds like a pipsqueak trying to play grown-up — a Lothario whose pickup lines land, time after time, with a thud....full text
