 Fans of the late Teddy Pendergrass would do well to check out the latest from Jaheim, whose style recalls Pendergrass' growly sensitivity. Another Round's charms take time to unspool, but like an experienced lover, he knows that the journey is as important as the destination, so he never stints on the fine-grain detail. | Truth in advertising, Another Round varies little from Jaheim’s earlier efforts, but for the returning listener, that’s the selling point. Right off the bat the fingersnapping funk of “Ain’t Leavin’ Without You” brings that husky brand of neo-soul that’s unique to the singer, who’s partnered here with a handful like-minded producers including the returning KayGee. With warm guitars, jazzy flutes, and early-'70s soul nostalgia, the following “Finding My Way Back” is a perfect example of how the singer nails those Vandross-sized moments of yearning. The silky smooth “Her” gets at the cool passion of the Isley’s, and Bill Withers even comes to mind on some of the more organic cuts, but with such obvious respect for the past, the argument against interpolating Percy Sledge’s classic “When a Man Loves a Woman” for the trite “Impossible” should have been obvious. Still, at 14 cuts the album still stands after some trimming, and when you add big fan Jadakiss on the “Ain’t Leavin’ Without You” remix, you’ve got all the elements Jaheim fans require....full text |

| Jaheim’s new soulful record, his fifth, shows off his mature vocal styling that harkens back to classic R&B while still sounding thoroughly contemporary. This is a very solid set that places its emphasis on the vocalist’s smooth, rich tone and effortless phrasing. At 32, Jaheim is smart enough to know that he can’t play the horn-dog role so many of his peers pretend to inhabit, so “Another Round’’ is about relationships without the usual gratuitous sexcapade descriptiveness. He settles into a nice steady groove on the immensely appealing “Ain’t Leaving Without You’’ and on the vibrant “Whoa’’ as he struggles to articulate his feelings to his lover. The problem is that the set lacks the wow factor and never turns up the heat. The songwriting is assured but never inspired. The first single, the title track, is an obvious shot at the charts, and it serves its purpose, but it feels out of context with the rest of the songs. Working with producers like J.R. Rotem and his longtime collaborator Kaygee, Jaheim crafts a supremely polished set that will delight the ladies, but a lot of this feels a little too safe. (Out tomorrow)...full text |
