Marina And The Diamonds - The Family Jewels reviewThe widely reported surge in girls without guitars - or at least girls who aren't boys with guitars, semi-synth femme-indie (is it any wonder this scene never got a name) - is really the news that belongs to last year's headlines. Yet judging by releases scattered across early 2010, it could well turn out to be its second summer that really makes it. Chew Lips have already delivered an immaculate collection of neon electro-pop, Ellie Goulding's radiant forthcoming set is poised to receive plaudits in spades, but undeniable queen of this new dynasty has to be the unapologetically intrepid, Welsh-Greek chanteuse Marina Lambrini Diamandis.

For while those from the first wave, who either tripped over the hype and fell on their faces (Little Boots) or hinted at a longevity beyond the furthest reaches of their hairstyles (La Roux), made repeated attempts to assert their credibility within fairly narrow parameters, Marina & The Diamonds convincingly fight off the encroaching talons of expectation by embarking on a rampant, stomping adventure, letting no idea lie when it can be crashed into another loudly and a microphone placed nearby to collect the resulting sparks.

And probably for that reason, she's been taken to the heart of indie fans in toilet venues first when her most obvious parallel existence would have her nominated alongside character pop peers Gwen Stefani, Shakira and Pink at international awards ceremonies and touring Gaga-sized arena shows. And that should still be her destiny. On one hand she's super-derivative, channelling everyone from Siouxsie Sioux, Christina Aguilera, Kate Nash, Public Image Limited, The KLF to Tori Amos, Amanda Palmer and Regina Spektor. But on the other, she plays it like she's teaching them all a lesson....full text

NME’s first encounter with Marina Diamandis took place just over a year ago on a grim winter’s evening in a Soho coffee shop. On the cusp of releasing her debut single with independent NY-Lon label Neon Gold – a corking AA side of ‘Mowgli’s Road’/‘Obsessions’ – Marina sparkled through the bleak midwinter like the most popular girl at school but, endearingly, also the most goofy.

Cackling almost constantly, she breathlessly told us how she was going to rope in a choreographer for her high-camp live shows, during which she’d be wearing a fittingly extravagant selection of poufy ballgowns and regal Elizabethan neck ruffs. Then there was the idea for her fantasy band merch – tailormade corsets covered in Swarovski crystals, of course – and most nuttily thrilling of all, plans to play at the American MTV Awards in three years’ time. Now, when most artists who are so green they’re practically spitting salad and shitting grass suggest something as patently ludicrous as parading on a global stage without having even released their first single, the only acceptable reaction is to stifle your laughter before ordering them to sweep up their shattered dreams and kicking them in the direction of the nearest Job Centre. But Marina didn’t deserve such treatment. Behind her laughter was steely determination and a glint in the eyes which made you believe it might just happen. There was a near-fully formed pop star right in front of our face and no-one else in the room knew it except for us....full text

Marina Diamandis has already come a long way. Only six months ago she was playing to a half-empty third tent on a drizzly Friday afternoon at Leeds Festival. Now, she's been named the runner-up in the BBC's Sound Of 2010 critics poll and sleb blogger Perez Hilton is tweeting at her, declaring his undying love.

Some of this could be put down to good timing, of course. One-woman bands with curious names and a penchant for quirky pop are pretty in vogue right now, after all. But Marina's singles throughout 2009 showcased a genuine new talent, with Obsessions and Mowgli's Road becoming two pop music highlights of the year. But the buzz has ensured that debut album The Family Jewels is one of the year's more eagerly awaited releases.

On first listen it's a somewhat bewildering concoction, dizzily spinning from overtly theatrical pop at one turn to heartfelt ballads the next with, ever so occasionally, a song that sounds like it's had everything bar the proverbial kitchen sink thrown into it....full text
