Four Year Strong - Enemy Of The World reviewWhen I initially contacted Universal Motown about an advance of Four Year Strong’s hotly anticipated major label debut, Enemy Of The World, they told me I was SOL. When I asked why, they told me that someone had stolen the master copy.

That damn monkeywizard…

After reading his pathetic attempt at reviewing, I PM’d monkeywizard asking how I could obtain the new FYS album to give it the proper review it deserved. After a lengthy back and forth exchange in which he made fun of my 5950 hat collection and reminded me that Aaron Rodgers has never won a playoff game, he made it known that there was nothing I could do to get that master copy. Little did he know that I had some brand new Set Your Goals’ demos (monkeywizard’s a big fan). So in exchange for the demos (which were really just songs from New Again tagged as SYG tracks - monkeywizard is going to be pissed), I finally acquired the master copy of Enemy Of The World. After my first listen, I was floored. It was immediately evident that this album was built with machine guns, spiked bats, jagged rocks, and skulls. Oh yeah, I can’t forget about the wolves either. Enemy Of The World hits harder, runs faster, and operates more smoothly than its predecessor. Yes, the duel-vocals, infectious choruses, and delicious breakdowns are still present, only this time they sound a lot bigger. The production difference between this and Rise or Die Trying is dramatic. And you can thank Machine for that. He found the perfect balance between grit and gloss, as Four Year Strong have never sounded crisper.

Enemy Of The World still contains all the elements of FYS that you love - it’s just more refined and focused, as the songs don’t tend to blend together this time around. Also, Four Year Strong has constructed some songs that could see some success on radio, such as the NFG-tinged “Find My Way Back,” and its chorus that’ll have you pogo-ing up and down in no time, as well as “This Body Pays The Bill$,” which may feature the best chorus the band has written to date. “Flannel Is The Color Of My Energy” will be immediately become a fan favorite, as Josh Lyford’s synth works as the perfect complement to Dan O’Conner and Alan Day’s double barrel guitar attack....full text

One of music's premier pop punk bands, Four Year Strong, are set to release their heavily anticipated third full length album, Enemy of the World, in the UK on Defacto Records on May 31st 2010.

The band, Dan O'Connor (Vocals/Guitar), Alan Day (Vocals/Guitar), Josh Lyford (Vocals/Synth), Jake Massucco (Drums), and Joe Weiss (Bass), was formed in Massachusetts in 2001 after O'Conner, Day, and Massucco met through mutual friends.

With influences like Lifetime, Saves the Day, Gorilla Biscuits, and New Found Glory, FYS has always strived to create music that they themselves would enjoy as listeners. Their motivation has manifested itself in a fluid mix of everything from punk pop to hardcore to indie rock....full text

They play a weird mix of 8-bit super slick pop punk hardcore that kind of sounds like Contra meets In Flames meets Fallout Boy. I imagine a lot of goons either love of hate them, but I personally have yet to get bored of their debut CD, "Rise of Die Trying." It's perfect - 30 minutes of 2-3 minutes, all catchy, fun, and surprisingly technical. The artwork on said CD is awesome as well.

They're good live as well. They have a clear understanding of harmonizing and how to play their (admittedly) over-produced studio material as well as possible. You can hear some of their stuff here:

Now, the lead song "It Must Suck to be FYS Right Now" is the lead single from the new album so don't start there. I'd start with "Men Are from Mars, Women are from Hell" or "Catastrophe" if you want to get feel for the general sound.

I'm not typically in to pop-punk (or it's derivatives), but for some reason this band just does it for me. They are finally putting our a new album March 9, entitled "Enemy of the World." Their debut album is more or less a perfect album for the genre it falls in to, so I'm scared that a follow-up is going to be a let down, but you never know. The single they've put out is a mere OK - not horrible, but not great.

I figure there have to be a few goons that are as excited for this album as I am - are you out there? If so, let's discuss....full text
