Paul Baribeau doesn’t waste much time. He doesn’t waste time shaving. He doesn’t waste time on things like “production values”. He doesn’t waste time with shit like details, or big words, or anything besides the harsh, brutal basics as far his uncomfortably personal lyrics go. And he certainly doesn’t waste your fucking time, especially not with Grand Ledge. It’s only 19 minutes long, consisting of 9 short tracks, and Baribeau’s barebones stylings benefit from the brevity; anything longer wouldn’t have the same impact. This is especially because the instrumentation is simple - nothing more than an acoustic guitar, played extremely fast to match Baribeau’s rattled-off lyrics - so Grand Ledge lends itself for quick, yet close listens. The closeness comes from Grand Ledge’s lyrics; Baribeau’s tales are stuff that discouraged college students dream of, concerning loneliness, wasting time away at a shitty job, Christmas break at home with parents, etc, etc. Stuff people can really relate to.

But that doesn’t happen with Baribeau; his gruff and matter-of-fact delivery adds a sense of authenticity to his lyrics, like he knows they’re not top-notch, but they’re his feelings and he doesn’t really give a shit about anything else. That’s the appeal of this album; when you’re a guy like me, who can’t seem to give a shit about anything, than Grand Ledge is all you want to listen to. And, after much thought, I’ve decided that’s a good thing....full text |

| paul baribeau is really great. his songs are beautiful and simplistic, but also almost hard to listen to because of how raw they are. also, he is amazing live. and you can buy this album (and all of his other stuff, which is equally as nice) from plan-it-x records for five dollars....full text |
