Natalie Merchant is just talented enough to escape her own trap. On her new album, she’s taken poems by everyone from Jack Prelutsky to Robert Louis Stevenson and crammed them into 26 tracks of museum-piece jazz, Starbucks bluegrass and PBS reggae. It’s an effortlessly elegant and pleasant ride that even the obvious hip-yuppie trappings of it all can’t obscure.Merchant takes her time between projects, and you forget how deeply wired every inflection of this woman’s voice is in your head; her best work has always been tinged with whimsy, and here she lets the colors run amok with a childlike confidence. | Whether in 10,000 Maniacs or her subsequent solo career, there was always hidden depth to Natalie Merchant. Hugely right-on and committed to causes, there’s nevertheless molten sex appeal just beneath the surface, as is obvious in her live shows, where she can rip out a hair grip, shake out her curls and turn from buttoned-up librarian to barefoot tribal queen in roughly a minute. Then there’s the quirky, unbridled curiosity. Lately, things have quietened down a bit, since Merchant has married and had a daughter - but, as this collection signalling her return shows, imagination and the unexpected are still on handy speed-dial. So it may be no surprise, in the circumstances, that Merchant is working with a clutch of obscure and lovely poems for children. What’s unusual is how she takes each one out of its comfort zone, setting the poems to the kind of music that takes them into cool adult territory.
