While I subscribe to the notion that the main point of reviewing a small band is to win them followers, I also can't help but think about how what I'm writing is already moot. Basically this just becomes a semi-longwinded way to coax you into pushing that MySpace link down below. All the pretty language in the world isn’t going to sway you, and it wouldn’t even matter if I said something like, “Stegosaur saved me!” Basically it’s skim a few sentences, take a look at the score and give Stegosaur, maybe, 25 seconds of your time. You know you do it, so why not do it here, too?And did I mention everyone thinks Stegosaur sound like Cursive? I guess I agree, in that Stegosaur channel quite a bit of creative energy into old-fashioned barstool rock. “A Headache” is catchy and grating, sometimes simultaneously. “Big Breath” is the same way, except it finds extra inspiration in the frivolity of math-rock bands like Look Mexico. Basically it’s as simple as this: good rock music that comes at you quick and leaves only after a sloppy kiss and maybe a mechanical bull ride. Although closer “Bloooooood” is different both in its length (over 4 minutes!) and its restraint, it could foretell an interesting, and much more creative, niche for these young Texans. The organ-ish keyboard and especially emotive singing make this song closer to what is popular with all you pesky college kids. Which is good for them since they live in a college town....full text |

| Stegosaur fuse the simple power chord based style of pop-punk with the hand-clapping, gang vocals, and other eccentricities that midwest emo is known for. The result is a sound that’s familiar yet resists the urge to be classified by any singular influence or genre. The Adventure 7″ is a refreshing release for fans of bands like Grown Ups, By Surprise, or pretty much any pop-punk group from the last 15 years....full text |

| Stegosaur(formerly Bison) released their second EP Adventure last week. This three song offering was made available on a vinyl 7″ from the San Antonio based label Seafoam. The album shows a softer side of the band whose first release was an intense take of mid 90’s indie rock. The standout vocals of front man Jerid Morris that shift from a soft aching plea to raw power are still there but the intense drive of the music is pulled back a little. Adventure starts out in almost the same way Sans Sensation did with a song about the music industry. Instead of a song about selling ones soul to the devil in exchange for fame, Headache quickly explores the ideas of putting together an album to peak the curiosity of label A&R guys. By quickly I mean quickly as the song is only around a minute and thirty seven seconds. The vocals on this song bare close resemblance to that of Conor Oberst(Bright Eyes, Monsters of Folk) but not enough to feel as if it was done on purpose. Wether or not a second song on the subject means that Stegosaur has a single focus of breaking through into popularity, this album proves they have the capability. The second song on the album entitled Big Breath reminds me a bit of Weezer in the inflection of some of the words. The vocals stay pretty tame through out the song never really peaking as in the other songs. The music is a bit tame as well, focusing on the guitar accents and “keyboard” but even with the slightly muted feel to the song… it sucks you in. Side B of the album contains the last song Bloooood and in my opinion saves the best for last. The aching plea and raw power I was speaking of earlier really comes into play in this song. “We open our eyes and see the world, We close our eyes and cry like girls” Morris croons and it just tugs at your heart as he launches into his power voice. If you could make a connection to something in your personal life with the song it most certainly provides the push that could bring a tear to your eye....full text |
