Infamous Stringdusters - Things that Fly reviewDusting is a gentle thing involving feathers and tiny particles floating woozily in shafts of sunlight, but that visual has no place in the music of The Infamous Stringdusters. What this Nashville sextet offers is more of a string band assault, conjuring images of sweatbeads and calloused fingertips.

Things that Fly, the band’s third LP, rollicks through a 45-minute tour of string music’s many incarnations, from old-timey country (a cover of Jody Stecher’s “17 Cents”) to true-blue bluegrass (“You Can’t Stop the Changes”) to vigorous instrumental folk (“Magic #9”). All this would be impossible without the Dusters sharp instrumental skill, boisterous vocals and adventurous experimentation. The six-piece has all three in spades, a fact they showcase expertly on a rambunctious, surprising cover of U2’s “In God’s Country.” With all the joy and vitality these boys coax out of their dobros, banjos, standing bass and the myriad other instruments featured, you may find yourself wondering what on earth they’re doing to those strings to create such a pleasing racket, but one thing’s for certain—they sure as hell aren’t just dusting them....full text

Infamous Stringdusters began their career as a super group of Nashville pickers that blew away fans and critics with their caliber of songs and jaw-dropping instrumental skills which transformed into an impressive live act. On their latest release, Things that Fly, they had the privilege to record at Dave Matthews’ Haunted Hollow studios in Charlottesville, Virginia and enlisted renowned producer Gary Paczosa.

Things that Fly captures their growth as a band emphasizing more on melodies and songwriting along with some fast picking thrown in there for good measure (they are the “Stringdusters” for a reason). "All the Same" and "It’ll be Alright" showcases the vocals of Travis Book and his ability to capture the listener with his heartfelt lyrics and irresistible hooks. Tracks such as Andy Hall’s spiritual-inspired, "Those Who’ve Gone On" and the uplifting, "Love One Another" reflect their softer side and show their progression as songwriters. They do throw some curveballs in such as a reverb soaked cover of U2’s "In God’s Country" and country music star, Dierks Bentley lends his vocals to the poor man’s anthem, "17 Cents." Throw in some refreshing instrumentals like "Magic #9" and "The Deputy" and you have a release that will compete for best bluegrass album of the year....full text

The bluegrass community knows that the quick-picking Stringdusters are top-notch musicians, but the group’s third full-length album displays a heightened focus and elevated songwriting quality when compared to their previous releases. This can likely be attributed to the concentrated nine days the Stringdusters spent recording at rocker Dave Matthews’ Haunted Hollow studio with co-producer Gary Paczosa. Songs like the happy-go-lucky “It’ll Be Alright” and “Love One Another,” which benefit from some particularly tight harmonies, enliven this collection with a positive spirit. On a surprising cover of Irish rockers U2’s “In God’s Country,” the Stringdusters highlight the song’s haunting melody and turn the tune’s coda into a driving mandolin, Dobro and banjo showpiece. “Those Who’ve Gone On” pays tribute to dear departed ones who, somehow, still provide guidance, while the band waxes humorous on “17 Cents,” on which guest Dierks Bentley throws in his own two cents’ worth. The sentiment of the smooth lead-off song, “You Can’t Stop the Changes,” neatly sums up the forward progression heard in the enjoyable mix of musical virtuosity and unpredictability that propels Things That Fly skyward....full text
