Active Child - Curtis Lane EP reviewPat Grossi's a harpist, an ex-choirboy, an Active Child; precious, no? Nah, not really. Grossi's gauzy, twinkly Active Child songs feel at once rather humble and astronomically huge. Bits of Animal Collective's stacked harmonies, Dazzle Ships' askew shimmer, and M83's post-New Order epic pulse coalesce in Grossi's tidy yet titanic sound, stretched out over six songs and 30 minutes on the Curtis Lane EP. Precious? More like prodigious.

Tracks here comes in a couple of varieties: there's the hazier, sultrier, slower numbers, and the ones you can dance to. Grossi's smart to keep the two sides in balance, but while the thumpier numbers have their charms, they seem a bit timid next to the others' sky-streaking grandeur. "I'm in Your Church at Night" seems to stretch on forever, matching Grossi's heaven-sent falsetto to a lush rumble not unlike a screwed'n'chopped "In the Air Tonight". His compositional skill is really something, moving beats and harp plinks and negative space in and out without disrupting the majestic scope of the tunes. His falsetto, a touch meek on its own, has a dreamy incandescence when piled on top of itself. The harp's far from the focus here, but coupled with his voice, it provides a organic counterpoint to the synthetic sounds constantly shuffling underneath him....full text

I’m finding it really hard to write this review. For the last few months my weekly playlists have been blessed with a slow flow of Active Child tracks, both demos and remixes. Then there was the brilliant single on Transparent, the b-side, more remixes and now an EP. Six tracks of pure, blissed out beauty, and I’m feeling a little overwhelmed.

I know I’m being over dramatic; it’s an EP. It’s not even half an hour long. But the name Active Child has grown pretty dear to me recently. It’s been a bright spark on a boring day at work, a warming soundtrack on a cold walk home, and a barrier from the fighting couple on the Mega Bus.

The Curtis Lane EP doesn’t disappoint. It’s what I’ve come to hope for from LA’s Pat Grossi; echoing beats that clip at the corners of my speakers, a blanket of synths I can feel wrapping around my shoulders, and lyrics that manage to be both deeply personal and entirely accessible.

It’s lines like “But I know exactly where I am/Somewhere between making love and being friends” that have probably been penned from some heart ripping tale of past love, but still lend themselves very neatly to whatever scenario I fancy rehashing in my head while listening. I just want to pretend that Pat and I, on some level, could be friends.

And then there’s the wrenching refrain of ‘Take Shelter’, “If you’re afraid in this world/Say a prayer tonight/Lay down close your eyes/You’ll be safer in my arms.” Reading it back it looks pretty corny, but when it’s swathed across a backdrop of darting synth and static beats it just sounds inviting....full text

This six-song EP is the first proper release from Los Angeles-based artist Active Child, following on from a number of out-of-print limited editions that have garnered interest from all the right tastemakers. 'When Your Love Is Safe' is a real class act, delivering a synth-pop masterpiece that's not got an ounce of retro in it. Instead, a soaring falsetto vocal (that at times comes across as a bit Justin Vernon) fronts a crunching, electroid R&B production. In other developments, 'She Was A Vision' makes exemplary use of sunkissed gauzy beats, nuanced synth textures and daydreaming textural atmospherics - there's even a spot of harp thrown in. It's all very good indeed. The EP wraps up with 'Wilderness', which is another futuristic, spectral R&B bomb masquerading as bedroom-penned electro-pop. You'd be well advised to grab one of these....full text
