Saving Abel - Miss America reviewIt is never a good sign when a band is arguably best known for having a close-up of a jean-clad female backside on their album cover. If this is not the claim to fame of Mississippi quintet Saving Abel, then it is probably that they included the lyric “I’m so addicted to all the things you do, when you’re going down on me in between the sheets” on their very first single. Somewhere, Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger was contemplating litigation for gimmick infringement! Yet, the band’s self-titled debut LP was a strange beast; predominantly neglecting the chest-thumping post-grunge / hard-rock hybrid it suggested, for unmemorable mid-tempo radio-rock cuts and power ballads.

Two years down the track and it seems that Saving Abel have not progressed all that much on follow-up album ‘Miss America’. What appears to be a ditzy blonde in a revealing American flag styled dress adorns the cover art, the lead single is titled ‘Stupid Girl (Only In America)’ and the rumored second single is called ‘The Sex Is Good’! Thankfully, the solid and sufficiently catchy title track is not about a beauty pageant, but turns out to be a play on words inspired by the band’s tour of the Persian Gulf for the USO/Armed Forces Entertainment.

Similarly to their debut, ‘Miss America’ starts out in poor fashion. Opener ‘Tap Out’ actually begins promisingly with 80 seconds of distorted instrumental build-up which suggests something more ambitious than expected. But as soon as lead vocalist Jared Weeks opens his mouth, Saving Abel begin to tread the same ground that bands like Papa Roach did a decade ago. You know the type of stuff; “Take your best shot at me… You got something to say, then say it to my face”. The aforementioned lead single also ploughs familiar territory, while the strange Southern ballad of sorts that is the horrendously titled ‘The Sex Is Good’ will not do much for anyone other than those looking for a tender moment in a strip club somewhere in Hicksville, U.S.A....full text

Saving Abel haven’t changed up their strategy too much on their second album, Miss America – unfortunately. Fans of the Mississippi quintet will be thrilled that the band have followed the formula of their self-titled 2008 debut, bouncing between crunchy post-grunge hard rock and soulful, Southern-fried ballads, but Saving Abel’s somewhat generic sound doesn’t yield enough surprises. As a result, this is music that plays to the masses in an anonymous, unexciting way.
Scruffy but Bland
Boosted by the success of the bad-sex paean “Addicted,” Saving Abel managed to go gold, yielding two other hit ballads in the process, “18 Days” and “Drowning (Face Down).” Though unquestionably melodic, these songs wore their influences on their sleeve, emulating the earnest tunefulness of other rock-radio staples like 3 Doors Down. Miss America demonstrates that frontman Jared Weeks and his bandmates still have a knack for grungy, vaguely scruffy rock ‘n’ roll, but Saving Abel still don’t possess much of a personality, which would help elevate their competent hooks.
A Few New Touches
To be fair, Saving Abel do attempt new musical approaches on Miss America, like on the swampy acoustic-guitar ditty “The Sex Is Good,” but the song is nothing more than a boring look at a messed-up sexual relationship that evokes a similar scenario from “Addicted.” And the band do try to dress up the lumbering “Bloody Sunday” with some faint guitar trickery and the sincere, syrupy power ballad “I’m Still Alive” with an orchestral opening, but these flourishes don’t add much to what is basically straightforward mainstream rock. In the buildup to the release of Miss America, Saving Abel said that the album would showcase a more mature band, but while there is a more layered, stylish sound (helped by co-producer Marti Frederiksen), the record’s essence feels simplistic and unsophisticated....full text

June will be a banner month for Saving Abel, as the band will release Miss America on June 8. The album follows up to the band's breakthrough debut. In an official statement, guitarist Scott Bartlett said, "There is always anticipation when it comes to the release of a new record. You're nervous, excited, and vulnerable. The key is to remember that this is rock 'n' roll and those emotions don't matter once the record is done. We roll the dice and the game begins. We couldn't be more proud of the way it turned out. Now it's up to the public. Get ready." I'm ready, so bring it, Saving Abel.

The quintet continues their current world tour which has, over the past several months, touched down in India, Qatar, Kuwait, and Iraq (via a USO / Armed Forces Entertainment tour of the Persian Gulf), extensively across the U.S., and in the middle of the Pacific Ocean aboard the USS Carl Vinson as the vessel returned from Haiti. Previously announced appearances on the current run include Erie, PA (5/19), Poughkeepsie, NY (5/20), Hartford, CT (5/21), Rocklahoma (5/28), El Paso, TX (Balloonfest 5/29), Lafayette, LA (6/05), Boloxi, MS (6/25), and Springfield, MO (6/27). On June 30 in Kansas City, MO, headliner Saving Abel, will hit the road with direct support act We Are The Fallen, and openers American Bang and Taddy Porter....full text
