We Are Scientists - Barbara reviewSince the release of 2008’s Brain Thrust Mastery, We Are Scientists have enlisted former Razorlight man Andy Burrows on drums and created and starred in a series of short MTV mock-docs.

Listeners to this fourth album concerned about any comedy influence can rest easy, though, as Brooklyn-based pair Keith Murray and Chris Cain have only allowed the addition of Burrows to affect their day jobs. After all, one Flight of the Conchords is enough.

WAS have long been a compelling live proposition, and have previously impressed with singles like the bittersweet emo indie of After Hours and breakthrough dance-punker The Great Escape. Barbara unexpectedly marks the first occasion when they’ve delivered a truly consistent album.

The album’s zenith is surely ace drinking paean Jack & Ginger. Aside from the verses of scuffed guitars and the cute kids TV show synth melody, there’s a chunk of Elvis Costello regret in the chorus as Murray intones: “No matter what I do, its way too late too late for self-control”....full text

Their ‘With Love And Squalor’ album incontestably rocked, but follow-up ‘Brain Thrust Mastery’ dropped the ball somewhat. Adding those superfluous synths made the whole thing too polite, too lacking in the corrosive twang of its predecessor. After underwhelming sales meant that they were relieved of the obligation to make records for a major label, frolicsome funbags duo Chris Cain and Keith Murray – joined here temporarily by Andy Burrows’ Spitting Image puppet (played as ever by Andy Burrows) – have come up with a compromise. They’ve revived the fantastic ziggurat riffs of the first, and applied them to songs with more of the new wave sophistication of the second. The results often sound like the whole thing was pieced together in a morning, but at their best WAS are meant to be slightly slapdash. They’re having their own sonic keg party here: coasting through the fuck-ups on the basic likeability – the sheer shaggy melodic charm – of the hosts....full text

For a band that shares its name with a Cap’n Jazz song, We Are Scientists sports a pretty straightforward sound, channeling any emo impulses it might have into well-polished, tidy little dance-rock tunes. And really, frontman Keith Murray seems more comfortable when he’s flaunting his bad-boy skills and blaming things on the a-a-a-a-a-alcohol than when he’s letting his emotions get in the way. (Really, lines like “Although it may seem unconventional / sometimes indiscretion is worth a try” sound better atop a catchy groove than under a pile of unhinged post-hardcore.) Barbara is the latest addition to the New York outfit’s solid discography, and if things seem kind of familiar around here, it’s because the trio hasn’t bothered to fix something that isn’t broken. (One change is that WAS has a new drummer, and proving how much bigger the band is in the UK, it’s an Englishman named Andy Burrows, formerly of Razorlight.) Highlights tend to emerge around elevated tempos, including the ones found in “Nice Guys” (which, in an emo twist, sounds a bit like The Get Up Kids circa Something To Write Home About) and the Killers-esque “You Should Learn,” though WAS also pulls off a nice mid-tempo move in “Ambition,” whose guitar hook brings to mind Fleetwood Mac’s “As Long As You Follow.” Dance, pop, and you don’t stop....full text
