A better entry point is “If You Want To”, co-written by Semisonic’s Dan Wilson. Like much of the album, the song has a lilting country rock groove that could be a lost Eagles track. House tosses in just enough piano riffs and hand claps to keep things interesting. It is not a bad way to spend a few minutes, but also not a track that demands another listen. House has been at this for a while. This is his fifth album, and The Learner feels like it was written by someone who is a little too comfortable with where he’s at. There is a lack of urgency throughout. House is a engaging songwriter, but he doesn’t stretch much here. The result is an entire album is filled with good solid songs, but no great ones. It’s not as if House doesn’t feel any angst. His lyrics return frequently to the theme of yearning for something just beyond his reach—love, fame, satisfaction. On “Gotta Get Out”, House repeats the mantra “Gotta get out of this town before it’s too late”. He is a man running out of time to follow his dreams, but while the song itself is catchy, it is also a bit slack, betraying the lyrical sentiment. The mood should be one of intense desperation, but instead the music lends the impression that, while getting out of town is a priority, House might take a nap first....full text |

| Griffin House’s The Learner displays true artistry with his pleasant voice, serene musical compositions and exquisite, vivid lyrics. His songs are mostly about the one he couldn’t get, the one who makes him ponder and the one he hopes to one day be with. The musician-songwriter gets sentimental, but keeps it manly. On this release, House didn’t hold anything back, which is good because it turned out to be an excellent, noteworthy album. All 12 songs are enjoyable and arranged in such a way that evokes a range of emotions. For starters, listen to “If You Want To” followed by “Feels So Right” and “Just Another Guy.” Then, hit replay....full text |

| The Learner, the new album from renowned singer-songwriter Griffin House, will be released June 22 on Evening Records. This is the fifth full-length recording from the Nettwerk-managed artist, who has been widely heralded by critics and fans alike. Of the Ohio-native, music journalist Bill Flanagan (MTV/VH1) raves, “I bought House’s CD after a show in New York City and, this never happens, I took it home and must have listened to it 20 times that weekend. I was knocked out.” 2010 has already proven a breakout year for House, who is currently featured in an 11-page spread in the April issue of Esquire magazine. For the piece, Esquire invited five of their favorite musicians—Dierks Bentley, Charlie Mars, Bob Schneider, Ben Kweller and Griffin House—to take part in a songwriting challenge and two-day fashion shoot with world-famous photographer Danny Clinch in Clarksdale, Mississippi. More information regarding the profile is available HERE. Listen to House's single "She Likes Girls" (March 23), of which the New York Post comments, "Griffin House mixes smart lyrics with massive sounds resulting in a singer/songwriter granola-funk." Recorded primarily at Sound Emporium studios in Nashville, The Learner continues House’s collaboration with the producer team of Justin Loucks and Ian Fitchuk (Mindy Smith, Landon Pigg), with whom he worked with on his 2004 release Lost and Found. Also featured on the record is world-renowned singer Alison Krauss, providing vocal harmonies on “River City Lights” and Dan Wilson (Semisonic) who produced and co-wrote “If You Want To.” Of the finished album, House comments, “I think my feelings are best summed up with a line from the record itself—‘I don't want to rule the world. I don't need to try to be a king. I just want to live my life with you, and give you everything.’ Since his debut in 2003, House has toured extensively, opening for artists such as Ron Sexsmith, Patti Scialfa, Josh Ritter, John Mellencamp, Mat Kearney and The Cranberries. A national full-band tour is planned in support of the record. Additional details will be announced shortly....full text |
