Gucci Mane makes mixtapes. It's what he does. About a month and a half ago, Gucci was released from prison after serving a six-month parole-violation sentence. But it's no shock to see him coming out with an hour of new songs so soon after his release. After all, one of the best Gucci songs from last year was "First Day Out", which he supposedly recorded on, literally, his first day of freedom after he served his last six-month parole-violation sentence. Going to prison for parole violation, see, is the other thing Gucci does. Or, as the man himself puts it on "Georgia's Most Wanted", "I spend my winter in the jail, so I'm balling all summer/ Bad bitches on my tail hunt me like a bounty hunter." So if he goes back to the big house before 2010 ends, we can't say he didn't warn us.Even with that prison sentence, Mr. Zone 6 isn't Gucci's first mixtape of the year. Back in spring, we got The Burrrprint (2) HD, which had some music that Gucci recorded over the phone from prison but more that was left over from earlier sessions. It's amazing he even had anything left; Gucci released six mixtapes and one official album last year. And even though he's just absurdly prolific, all of those releases made for a strong end-to-end listen. The Burrrprint (2), meanwhile, was just OK, which can only mean one thing: Despite the insane amount of music he puts out, Gucci cares about quality control. With The Burrrprint (2), we learned what happens when Gucci's reduced to releasing leftovers. And with Mr. Zone 6, we're reminded what happens when he has time to put together a serious album-length piece of work. The difference is revelatory....full text |

| The per capita income in Atlanta, Georgia is $29,772. Psh. Gucci Mane will drop that much on a ‘stupid a** bracelet.’ Well, damn! Early morning, May 13th, Radric Davis was released from Fulton County Jail. Several YouTube videos showed him swaggering out of the prison with a big smile on his face sporting his 1017 chain. He proceeded to greet assorted companions, including Shawty Lo, and then gave a speech to the press about his intentions to be a role model to children and a stand up citizen… …he’ll be back in there in a few months for violating parole. Nope, his demeanor hasn’t changed a bit. In a little over a month, the icy Atlantan rapper has accomplished quite a lot. He posted Twitpics of his newest addition to his jewelry collection – 1000 karats, by the way –accompanied by all the “brrrr”s and “bling blaoww”s you could ever want, created his own adlib iPhone application, released two new ridiculous music videos, made a funny promotional video for his upcoming album The Appeal: Georgia’s Most Wanted, and released a full length mixtape. Let’s face it, the mixtape king and jewelry enthusiast has stayed on his grind, and that’s evidenced with Mr. Zone 6, yet another ‘warmup’/promotional tape in a long line of official street releases. While the man himself may not have changed, his music definitely has. In 2009, we saw Gucci come a long, long way from being just another coke rapper with great beats. However, although a good release Mr. Zone 6 is (and I iterate this with an untrusting tentativeness) perhaps an indicator that 2010 Gucci has no chance of paralleling ’09 Gucci. On Mr. Zone 6, we find a Gucci who seems to have finally settled into the darker-sounding niche he first carved for himself on Burrprint. Moreover, he’s showcased the abilities to consistently make an infectious hook and pull off, well, impressive flows with ease and smoothness while retaining a fun delivery…...full text |

| In 50 years when Gucci Mane has been accepted as an important rapper by everyone—including college professors—there will have to be historians dedicated to unraveling his long and convoluted internet-only mixtape history. It’s already complicated enough as it is, and there are a lot of unofficial, spotty releases, but we can safely count Mr Zone 6 as one of the good ones. Highlights include the double-time “Dat’s My Life,” and the multiple appearances of Yo Gotti and Waka Flocka, who still sounds like an excited kid let loose in the studio....full text |
