Gregor Samsa deserves better. The three bands that they resemble the most (Sigur Ros, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and Low) each are far more popular in the indie world, have bigger labels courting their future work, and don’t have to have day jobs if they don’t desire them....full text |

| With the recent release of the Cocteau Twins’ Lullabies to Violaine, there seems no better time to reflect on how uniquely perfect they were in forging a new sound. Perhaps it’s listening to "Pepperment Pig" that has this on my mind, but Gregor Samsa create similarly stunning, dense dream pop more than twenty years after the release of Treasure. | Gregor Samsa, the Richmond, VA, band led by Champ Bennett, not the earlier outfit from Illinois also named after Franz Kafka's most famous character, has made two EPs and a split CD with Red Sparowes during its stop-and-start five-year existence, but 55:12 (which actually runs about 50 and a half minutes) is its first full-length album.
