Broadcast 2000 - S/T reviewWhen asked to describe his music in three words, B2K front-man Joe Steer chose the immortal words "Tinkle", "pluck" and "thwack". Personally we'd have opted for "stereophonic folk.... bitch". Always get stuck on the third word...

In the recording studio, Broadcast 2000 is Steer's own baby. Being the man for all occasions is usually a fairly hefty burden to bear, yet Steer manages it with ease and grace, granting equal footing to instrumentation as to vocals. He doesn't scrimp on the eclecticism either, all manner of tones, timbres and pitches are elicited from all manner of instruments. Pretty lines do not make a drawing though, so it's fortunate that Steer also has his song-writing ability in check.

Not that anything on this eponymous album is likely to set the world alight. It's individualistic to prove interesting to the more adventurous of music lovers, yet is far too unassuming to even contemplate a star-grab. No, Steer's eyes remains humbly trained to the earth. An affable trait, but as anybody will attest, you have to extend yourselves in some way to really make a splash these days. Competence is no defence....full text

A few years ago I featured Broadcast 2000′s EP Building Blocks on the site. Thought I’d give you an update that he just released his self-titled debut on Gronland records. It’s some of the catchiest folk music out there, and it’s definitely worth your time to check out. There are a ton of great songs on here, including “Get Up and Go,” “Rouse Your Bones,” “Don’t Weigh Me Down,”"I Hold My Breath,” too many to list…

Broadcast 2000 is based out of London and is a bedroom project of Joe Steer. He classifies his music as “folk-influenced indie acoustic pop,” which I would say is a surprisingly accurate description. Also, I just read an interview with him on Spinner, and he was asked about his craziest tour experience . He said that at one of his shows he met somebody who legally changed his name to a number! His name was 1069. And people called him 1-0 for short., I don’t really have any reason for sharing that tidbit… I just thought it was awesome. It makes me wonder if I can officially change my name to ”exclamation.” I guess I would just go by “ex” and then spell my name “!”.

Anyway… check out Broadcast 2000....full text

Serving to remind us of a now distant season as we wade through the inches of snow, Broadcast 2000 delivers his emphatic sounds to the world
Following on from his debut EP ‘Building Blocks’, Broadcast 2000, the musical brainchild from the awesomely talented singer-songwriter Joe Steer, is every bit the musical endeavour one might have hoped for. Finally venturing out of his bedroom, we see Steer enlist the help of producer Elliot James (Bloc Party/ Kaiser Chiefs) and Tom Hobden (Noah & Whale) to produce his much anticipated first full length feature album. A rich assortment of orchestral pop-folk, Broadcast 2000 is a gem of an album that instantly strikes a chord with its listener.

Soothing and instantly reassuring, even if this sort of music may not normally be to your liking, you’ll soon find your trail of thought shifting from “I don’t like this” to “I shouldn’t like this” to “I can’t help but like this”. It’s perfect for those days when you just want to sit back and relax. Hitting you from the get go, what first captures you about this 10 track strong album is the beautiful arrangements and the way Steers magnetising vocals work on a blissful back drop of cellos, ukuleles, guitars, glockenspiels and soft percussions; it’s a captivating mixture of indie folk and symphonic harmonies.

Whether you’re listening to the ‘Rose Your Bones’ to ‘I Hold My Breath’ amongst others on this album you’ll be suitably impressed. My personal favourite, aside from the better known "Get Up And Go" (E.ON advert) and "Don't Weigh Me Down", is track 6, ‘Gonna Build A Mountain’. With its quirky instrumentation and smooth vocals, it’s a wonderfully kitsch piece that undoubtedly exemplifies the beauty and simplicity that lies behind Steer’s work. It’s almost a pity he is choosing to showcase his music to the world in January because you can instantly imagine this being the sort of album you’d want blaring out of your speakers on a nice breezy summer’s afternoon. It’s an album of true musical gems that once rein you in, won’t let you go; and what’s more, you won’t want it to.
