"I was 22, alone with nothing to do," sings Adam Young on "I Live Alone." That's roughly the story of Sky Sailing, which preceded his other one-man band, the multiplatinum Owl City. The latter resembled the Postal Service, and this set, mostly completed in 2007, recalls Ben Gibbard's other band, Death Cab for Cutie. Young's songwriting is often lean, and with acoustic textures replacing Owl City's synth beats, his dreamy introspection takes center stage. | Teenage dreams, so hard to beat … When Adam Young was but a boy, a few years before he found synthpop fame as Owl City, he wrote a collection of songs in the comfort of his parents’ home back in Minnesota. In the wake of his band’s number one hit single Fireflies, it is perhaps inevitable that these teenage compositions have now been dusted off and have been granted a release which comes under the solo moniker of Sky Sailing. So, is this album the musical equivalent of a first novel which has been hidden in the bottom drawer? No, it’s more proficient – more tuneful – than that (even if Owl City’s output is hardly the work of a pop Amis or Vidal). Keyboard and string arrangements on top of acoustic guitar and (increasingly breathy and twee) vocals suggest some mature revisionism has gone into the production, but the songs themselves (especially A Little Opera Goes A Long Way) are likeable in a cuddly toy sort of way. His resulting cutesy digi-pop is created on a laptop in his parents' basement in Minnesota and yielded last year's hit "Fireflies" - the most downloaded iTunes single in America. This follow-up to his major-label debut, released as side-project Sky Sailing, delivers more bleepy, twinkly soundscapes.
