Neurosis - Live at Roadburn 2007 reviewNeurosis' evolution from crusty nobodies to the reigning kings of epic doomsludgewhatever is one of the more amazing transformations in metal. The band's debut album, 1987's Pain of Mind, is badly recorded hardcore. The titanic squall and face-caving tribal thump of 1996's Through Silver in Blood sounds like the work of a completely different and far more serious band.

Songs stretched to prog rock lengths without all the dainty and whimsical prog-rock bullshit. The rhythm section made everyone save early Swans-- an admitted influence-- sound weak and puny. And the riffs moved at lava-flow tempos, awesome and frightening in pretty equal measure. Neurosis weren't the first band to be ugly and majestic all at once, but at the time they felt pretty singular, especially considering their humble origins.

They don't sound quite so unique anymore, through no fault of their own. Neurosis' mid-90s sound has inspired more imitations and homages than most any other modern metal act. And Neurosis haven't stagnated over the last 14 years. (Melody! Who could have guessed?) But the band's basic goal remains the same as it did circa 1996: epic heaviness, music that raises you up only to pound you back down again....full text

“Emotion plus volume. This music comes from the stomach. Listen to the washes at the back of “Water is Not Enough.” Listen to the grimacing cries of “At the End of the Road,” the mortal desolation of “A Season in the Sky.” You’ll hear it or you’re a fool.

Imagine what it must have been like to have Neurosis step out on that stage. The 013 Popcentrum, Tilburg. Roadburn. An event unlike anything else the world over, and Neurosis with a legacy of carved granite. It must have been like rivers joining, flowing in the same direction. Forces of nature.

As you listen, set aside expectation. Put away your thoughts about what you think the work should or does sound like. It is not about the definitive. It is the execution. The temporal and the fleeting. You need to understand: This is the moment, captured. Emotion plus volume” -JJ Koczan / The Obelisk....full text

Oakland experimental metal pioneers Neurosis paved the way for proggy acts such as Mastodon, Baroness, Kylesa and Isis and show just how wide-ranging their influence is on this stellar live package. Recorded at the legendary Roadburn festival in Holland, the 78-minute set has a killer sound mix that perfectly captures the band’s atmospheric vibe and raw sonic power. The band pulls heavily from its 2007 album, Given to the Rising, serving up heaping doses of evil sludge on “At the End of the Road,” “Distill,” “Water is Not Enough” and the brutal title track. On the nine-minute journey that is “Season in the Sky” from 2004’s The Eye of Every Storm, vocalist/guitarist Steve Von Till lets out gut-busting war cries during chugging bridges but in quieter, spacey moments softly croons like David Gilmour. Other highlights include a creepy, punishingly passionate version of “Crawl Back In” from 2001’s A Sun That Never Sets, and “The Doorway” from the band’s underrated 1999 album Times of Grace. Hardcore fans are well aware of the power of Neurosis, who helped launch an eclectic brand of metal without boundaries along with their longtime producer, Steve Albini, and will be pleased with this offering. Albini has lent his touch to a number of like-minded experimental acts over the years but this stunning set proves Neurosis remain not only the pioneers, but one of the genre’s most powerful....full text
